Quadra-Fire

In the late 1970s, two young men started welding stoves by hand in a barn in the Aladdin Valley, outside Colville, Washington. Within a decade, their stove was burning its smoke four times over, and by the mid-1990s Quadra-Fire had the cleanest-burning non-catalytic stove line on the EPA's list.[2]

Brand SummaryQuadra-Fire was founded by Alan Trusler and Dan Henry as Aladdin Steel Products near Colville, Washington, in 1978–79.[21][13] Its Quad-Burn system, introduced in 1986, burns wood smoke in four zones without a catalytic combustor.[4][2] HON Industries (now HNI) bought the company in 1998,[11] and since 2023 Quadra-Fire stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, with the original model names.[19][20]

How Did Quadra-Fire Start?

Neither founder came to Colville to start a company. In 1975, Alan Trusler, a 19-year-old from Van Nuys, California, put off college to join a small Christian community at Cedar Creek, about 40 miles north of Colville. The community sat on land owned by Dan and LaDonna Henry. In 1978, Alan married Esther Henry, a niece of Dan's, and the next year he built a family home in the Aladdin Valley with a large shop beside it.[21]

That shop is where Alan and Dan Henry Jr. started building stoves. They called the business Aladdin Steel Products, and the first stoves went out as hand-built Aladdin Valley Stoves.[3] It was a welding shop and a steel shop first, and the stoves came out of the same hands that did the welding. In 1987, Alan moved the business and his family into the town of Colville.[21]

What Is Quad-Burn, and Why Did It Matter?

In the mid-1980s, state rules and then the EPA started limiting how much smoke a wood stove could put out.[1][10] Most manufacturers reached for a catalytic combustor, a honeycomb that burns smoke at a lower temperature but wears out and needs replacing. Aladdin went the other way. Dan Henry, an engineer by trade, spent nearly two years developing a stove that burned clean without a catalyst, because a catalyst's performance fades over time and the homeowner pays for it.[1]

The result was Quad-Burn, introduced in 1986.[4] It burns the fire in four zones:[2]

  • The primary zone is where the wood burns.
  • In the secondary zone, preheated air sweeps down the glass and meets the gases at the top front of the firebox, where you see the hovering blue and violet flames.
  • In the tertiary zone, air is heated in the side and rear walls and injected under the baffle through stainless steel manifolds.
  • In the quaternary zone, the baffle and ceramic blanket above the firebox burn what's left before it reaches the chimney.

The four zones gave the company its brand name.[5] Henry and G. Michael Hoteling filed the first patent in July 1987, and it was granted in August 1988, the same year the EPA's first national wood-stove standard took effect.[8][10] Aladdin's stoves tested around 2.1 grams of smoke an hour when the federal limit for non-catalytic stoves was 7.5.[1]

“…it was in the homeowner's best interest to provide clean-burning non-catalytic stoves rather than catalytic units that degrade in performance over time.”

Aladdin Steel Products, company history, 1997[1]

How Big Did Quadra-Fire Get?

Fast. Sales went from $180,000 in 1985 to $8.4 million in 1991, and about $17 million by 1997.[1] In 1990 came the stove that carried the brand for the next three decades, the 3100, which became the best-selling EPA-certified non-catalytic stove of its time.[1][17] The same year, Quadra-Fire launched what it called the industry's first fully automatic, self-lighting pellet stoves.[4] By 2004, the company could say every pellet stove it had ever built was fully automatic.[5]

In 1993, it put porcelain enamel on gas stoves, breaking what the company called the “any color as long as it's black” mold.[4] The awards followed. The 7100 wood fireplace was named Best New Hearth Product at the 2003 Vesta Awards,[4] and in 2006 the Mt. Vernon AE pellet insert won Best in Show, while the QFP44 won Best Gas Fireplace.[7][6]

Who Owns Quadra-Fire?

On February 20, 1998, HON Industries, the Iowa office-furniture company now called HNI Corporation, bought Aladdin's assets for about $10.2 million.[11] Aladdin Hearth Products became the third business in HON's hearth group, alongside Heatilator and Heat-N-Glo,[11] and Alan Trusler stayed on as president.[12] That group is now Hearth & Home Technologies, which still owns Quadra-Fire.

HON kept the business in Colville and financed a new plant: 122,000 square feet on 17 acres, announced in 1999[13] and opened in 2000.[4] In January 2007, a housing slump forced a month-long shutdown that furloughed all 380 of its employees.[14] In February 2017, HNI decided to close Colville manufacturing[15] and moved production to its plant in Halifax, Pennsylvania. About 100 manufacturing jobs went with it, and Quadra-Fire's engineering and technical team stayed in Colville.[16]

Is Quadra-Fire Still Made? Quadra-Fire and Forge & Flame

Yes. In August 2023, Hearth & Home Technologies brought its three stove brands, Quadra-Fire, Harman, and Vermont Castings, under one name: Forge & Flame.[19] Quadra-Fire models are sold as Forge & Flame stoves “featuring Quadra-Fire Technology,” and quadrafire.com now forwards to the Forge & Flame website.[20]

The model names you know are still there: Discovery, Millennium, Step Top, Classic Bay 1200, Santa Fe, Trekker, Outfitter, and Expedition II.[20] If you're searching for a new Quadra-Fire, you're looking for a Forge & Flame stove with one of those names. The models below are the current lineup.

Who Founded Quadra-Fire?

Alan was the builder of the business. He ran Aladdin Steel Products and, after the sale, Aladdin Hearth Products, and he kept the company in Colville. He loved the hearth industry and the people in it.[21] Alan Trusler died on October 8, 2025, at his home in Spokane, at 70, and he's buried in Colville.[21] At the 2026 HPBA Expo in New Orleans, Harman's Karen Harman Smeltz paid tribute to him in front of the industry he helped build.[22]

Dan was the engineer. His name is on every Aladdin patent, from the 1987 wood stove to gas and air-control designs he was still filing for HON in 2004.[8][9] In 2013, he was still making the case for pellet heat in northeast Washington.[23]

Can I Still Get Parts for an Older Quadra-Fire?

In most cases, yes. Hearth & Home Technologies still supports Quadra-Fire, and Forge & Flame dealers order parts by model and serial number. Find the rating label on your stove (your owner's manual shows where it is) and take a photo of it before you call. Gaskets, glass, firebrick, baffles, and pellet igniters are the parts people replace most. If your stove is from the 1980s or early 1990s, some parts may be gone, and a good dealer will tell you honestly whether a repair or a new stove makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who founded Quadra-Fire?

Alan Trusler and Dan Henry Jr. started the company as Aladdin Steel Products in the Aladdin Valley near Colville, Washington, in 1978–79. Dan Henry developed the Quad-Burn system, and Alan Trusler ran the company.

Is Quadra-Fire still in business?

Yes. Quadra-Fire is owned by Hearth & Home Technologies, and since August 2023 its stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name as models featuring Quadra-Fire Technology. Most of the classic model names, like Discovery, Millennium, Classic Bay 1200, and Santa Fe, are still in the lineup.

Who owns Quadra-Fire?

Hearth & Home Technologies, part of HNI Corporation. HON Industries, HNI's former name, bought the company in February 1998.

Where are Quadra-Fire stoves made?

Quadra-Fire stoves were built in Colville, Washington, until 2017, when production moved to Hearth & Home Technologies' plant in Halifax, Pennsylvania. Quadra-Fire's engineering team stayed in Colville.

Is it Quadrafire or Quadra-Fire?

The company has always written it Quadra-Fire, with a hyphen. Most people search for Quadrafire, and the website has always been quadrafire.com, which now forwards to Forge & Flame.

What's the difference between Quadra-Fire and Forge & Flame?

Forge & Flame is the brand Hearth & Home Technologies created in 2023 for its stoves. Quadra-Fire's models and engineering carry on inside it, so a Forge & Flame Discovery III is the Quadra-Fire Discovery III under the new name.

What does Quad-Burn mean?

It's Quadra-Fire's original non-catalytic combustion system. The fire and its smoke burn in four zones in the firebox, primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary, so most of the smoke burns before it reaches the chimney, with no catalyst to replace.

Do Quadra-Fire wood stoves have a catalytic combustor?

Quadra-Fire built its name on non-catalytic stoves, and the classic lineup burns clean without a catalyst. Today's EPA rules have pushed some stoves across the industry toward hybrid designs, so check the spec sheet of the exact model you're looking at.

What is the most famous Quadra-Fire stove?

The 3100. It launched in 1990, became the best-selling EPA-certified non-catalytic stove of its time, and got a 25th-anniversary limited edition in 2015. The Classic Bay 1200 is the best-known Quadra-Fire pellet stove.

Can I still get parts for my old Quadra-Fire?

Usually, yes. Forge & Flame dealers order Quadra-Fire parts by model and serial number, so photograph the label on your stove before you call. Some parts for stoves from the 1980s may no longer be made.

Where can I buy a Quadra-Fire stove?
