Who It's For
A wood stove sits in the middle of the room for decades, so it should look the way you picture it. You need a stove with real heat and real choices in how it is put together. The Forge & Flame Step Top 4300, featuring Quadra-Fire burn technology, is for the homeowner who wants a classic step-top shape and gets to pick the door and the base. A one-look stove fits the room; this one fits you.
What Makes It Special
You build it: choose an arched or rectangular cast iron door, with or without satin nickel trim, then set it on a pedestal or on Queen Anne or traditional legs.
Automatic Combustion Control adds air while the fire gets going and closes on its own in about 20 minutes. A load can last up to 12 hours, and the firebox takes logs up to 18 inches.
The pedestal and Queen Anne legs include an ash removal system, so cleanup goes into a pan instead of across the floor.
Possible Downsides
- A door and a base must be chosen to complete the stove. They are separate selections.
- The fan is an add-on.
- The traditional legs have no ash removal system.
If you want a classic wood stove assembled to your taste, the Forge & Flame Step Top 4300 is the right decision. The stove looks like it has always been part of the house, and it keeps the whole floor warm.
Choose an arched black door, an arched door with satin nickel trim, or a rectangular door; a pedestal, Queen Anne legs in black or satin nickel, or traditional legs; plus a 160 cfm fan kit, a satin nickel door upgrade, and an outside air kit.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much area can the Forge & Flame Step Top 4300 heat?
The Forge & Flame Step Top 4300, featuring Quadra-Fire burn technology, heats about 1,550–3,100 square feet. The manual lists 80.2% LHV and 74.2% HHV tested efficiency, and it's certified to the 2020 EPA wood heater standard at 1.6 grams per hour.
What do I need to choose to complete the Step Top 4300?
You pick a door and a base, since both are separate selections. Doors come arched in classic black, arched with satin nickel trim, or rectangular, all cast iron. Bases include a pedestal, Queen Anne legs in black or satin nickel, or traditional black legs.
Which Step Top 4300 bases include the ash removal system?
The pedestal and the Queen Anne legs include it, while the traditional legs don't. Once the stove and ashes are completely cool, you lower the ash door handle under the stove, lift the cast iron cap inside the firebox, and sweep ash down the channel into the drawer, leaving about 1/4 to 1/2 inch on the firebox floor for airflow.
How long will the Step Top 4300 burn overnight?
A load lasts approximately 8–12 hours. The 2.26 cubic foot firebox takes logs up to 18 inches, which is enough to carry a fire from evening through the night.
Do I have to keep adjusting the air on the Step Top 4300?
Not at start-up. Automatic Combustion Control adds air while the fire gets going and closes on its own in about 20 minutes. After that, the burn rate control sets airflow for the heat you want.
Does the Step Top 4300 have a fan?
A fan isn't standard, but you can add a 160 CFM fan kit. Other add-ons include a satin nickel door upgrade kit, which includes coordinating hinge pins and an air control handle, and an ACC outside air kit.
Can the Step Top 4300 go in a mobile home or an alcove?
Yes to both, with conditions. A mobile home install can't be in a sleeping room and needs the OAK-ACC outside air kit, the legs bolted to the floor, #8 copper grounding, double-wall connector pipe, and a UL103 HT chimney with a spark-arrestor cap. An alcove install needs 6-inch double-wall connector pipe and can be no more than 48 inches deep.
What venting and floor protection does the Step Top 4300 need?
It uses 6-inch vent pipe. In the US, the non-combustible floor protector must reach at least 16 inches in front of the glass and 8 inches to each side of the loading door; Canada requires 18 inches in front. The brochure gives a 31-5/8 by 41 inch minimum size.
The Quadra-Fire Story
Quadra-Fire was founded by Alan Trusler and Dan Henry as Aladdin Steel Products near Colville, Washington, in 1978–79. Its Quad-Burn system, introduced in 1986, burns wood smoke in four zones without a catalytic combustor. HON Industries (now HNI) bought the company in 1998, and since 2023 Quadra-Fire stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, with the original model names.
