Who It's For

Small rooms still need real heat, and in a small room the stove is right in front of you, so how it looks matters too. You need a compact stove that heats well and fits your style. The Forge & Flame Discovery I is for the smaller space, featuring Quadra-Fire burn technology, where the owner wants to change the look as easily as changing a rug. A plain box heats the room; this one becomes part of it.

What Makes It Special

The sides take any 12 by 12 inch ceramic tile, so you can match your floor, your hearth, or your mood. A solid side panel is included too if you prefer plain black.

Automatic Combustion Control gives the fire a boost of air when you light it, then closes on its own after about 20 minutes. Load it, light it, and walk away.

A wood bin is built into the pedestal, so the next few logs are right there. The door is cast iron with satin nickel hinge pins.

Possible Downsides

If you want a small wood stove you can make your own, the Forge & Flame Discovery I is the right decision. The tiles match the kitchen backsplash, and the reading nook is the warmest spot in the house.

Add the 160 cfm fan kit or an outside air kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space can the Forge & Flame Discovery I heat?

The Discovery I heats about 1,100–2,200 sq ft with an 82% certified efficiency rating. It has a 1.48 cu ft firebox, a peak output of 44,400 BTU per hour, and EPA-certified emissions of 1.7 grams per hour under the 2020 standard.

Can I put my own tile on the sides of the Discovery I?

Yes. Each side frame holds two nominal 12 by 12 inch noncombustible tiles, which must measure 11-11/16 to 11-7/8 inches square and no more than 5/16 inch thick. Solid side panels also come in the box, and you can repaint those with 300°F high-temp paint.

How does the Automatic Combustion Control on the Discovery I work?

You push back and pull forward on the activation knob, and a timer holds the startup air inlet open for about 20 minutes to get the fire going, then closes it on its own. After that, the burn rate control sets your heat level, and the Four-Point Burn System burns off gases above the baffle.

How long will the Discovery I burn, and how does it compare with the Discovery II and III?

The Discovery I burns about 5–7 hours per load and takes logs up to 16 inches. It's the smallest of the three; the Discovery II and III have bigger fireboxes, heat more space, and burn longer, with the brochure listing maximum burn times of 10 and 12 hours.

What other features does the Discovery I have?

A wood bin is built into the pedestal, so the next few logs are right there. The door is cast iron with satin nickel hinge pins, and the glass gives you 125 sq in of fire view. A 160 CFM fan kit is a separate, optional add-on.

Can the Discovery I be installed in a mobile home?

Yes, it's approved for mobile homes, but not in a sleeping room. The OAK-ACC outside air kit must be installed, the stove must be grounded to the frame with #8 copper wire, and the connector must be listed double wall pipe with a spark arrestor.

What floor protection does the Discovery I need, and can it go in an alcove?

In the US, the noncombustible floor protector must reach 16 inches in front of the glass and 8 inches past both sides of the loading door, with a 29-5/8 by 39 inch minimum flat-wall pad; Canada requires 18 inches in front. Alcoves up to 48 inches deep are allowed with double-wall pipe and at least 43 inches of height to the top of the stove.

What regular maintenance does the Discovery I need?

Check the baffle and ceramic blanket monthly, have the chimney inspected for creosote every two months during burn season, and look over the firebrick and door gasket weekly. Remove ashes once they're within 1-3/4 inches of the firebox lip and store them in a lidded metal container.

The Quadra-Fire Story

Quadra-Fire was founded by Alan Trusler and Dan Henry as Aladdin Steel Products near Colville, Washington, in 1978–79. Its Quad-Burn system, introduced in 1986, burns wood smoke in four zones without a catalytic combustor. HON Industries (now HNI) bought the company in 1998, and since 2023 Quadra-Fire stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, with the original model names.
