Who It's For

If the fireplace is supposed to heat a large part of the house, a small insert will run flat out and still fall short. It should have heat to spare. You need an insert with real output and a view of the fire worth watching. For a larger home or a drafty one, the Forge & Flame Trekker Insert, featuring Quadra-Fire burn technology, is that insert. Choose it and the far rooms finally feel the fireplace too.

What Makes It Special

Quadra-Fire rates it to heat 1,300 to 2,900 square feet, the most of the pellet inserts in this lineup; in most homes, expect 1,300–2,550 sq ft, depending on climate and layout. Its 284 sq in window is the largest of them, too.

The major parts are cast iron, made to last. A seven-day programmable wall thermostat comes standard, so you can have it warm before you wake up and turned down while you are at work. A single lever empties the ash, and five heat settings let you fine-tune the fire.

Possible Downsides

If you want your fireplace to heat a big home on pellets, the Forge & Flame Trekker Insert is the right decision. The whole floor stays comfortable, and the fire is the best view in the house.

Choose Classic Black, Porcelain Twilight, or Porcelain Mahogany, then a steel surround with nickel black trim or a steel surround with a cast trim kit, plus a two-piece ceramic log set, remote, and hearth support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Forge & Flame Trekker Insert heat?

In most homes, the Forge & Flame Trekker Insert, featuring Quadra-Fire burn technology, heats 1,300–2,550 square feet, depending on climate and layout. It's the strongest pellet insert in the Quadra-Fire family, rated 78% efficient on the higher heating value and certified at 0.74 grams per hour.

Is my fireplace big enough for the Trekker Insert?

The opening needs to be at least 24-3/8 inches tall, 32-1/4 inches wide at the front, and 24-1/8 inches wide at the back, with 16-5/8 inches of depth for the steel panel set or 16-1/4 inches for the cast set. It's approved for masonry fireplaces and factory-built (ZC) fireboxes.

What kind of thermostat comes with the Trekker Insert?

A seven-day programmable wall thermostat comes standard, so you can warm the house before you wake up and turn it down while you're at work. A dial behind a drop door on the side offers five heat settings from LOW to HIGH, and a remote control is optional.

Does the Trekker Insert come with a surround?

No, a surround is required and sold separately. Choose a Classic Black steel surround with nickel black trim, about 50 by 33 inches, or a steel surround for cast trim, about 45 by 34-1/2 inches, which also needs a cast trim kit in Classic Black, Porcelain Twilight, or Porcelain Mahogany.

How big is the fire view on the Trekker Insert, and what finishes are there?

Its 284-square-inch window is the largest among these pellet inserts, set in a body whose major parts are cast iron. The insert comes in Classic Black, Porcelain Twilight, or Porcelain Mahogany, and a two-piece ceramic log set is available as an extra.

How often do I need to clean the Trekker Insert?

Its 52-pound hopper feeds a firepot you clear by pulling the floor cleaning lever twice, daily or as needed, so ash drops into the pan below. The manual says to empty that ash pan weekly or every three to five bags of pellets.

What happens with the Trekker Insert when the power goes out?

It won't heat during an outage, because it runs on 115-volt household power, and smoke can back-draft into the room when the blower stops, so the manual suggests at least 5 feet of vertical vent. When power returns, it goes through a normal shutdown and then restarts on its own if the thermostat still calls for heat.

What venting and hearth protection does the Trekker Insert need?

It vents through 3-inch or 4-inch Type L or PL pipe, and the hearth needs only ember protection at least 15-1/8 inches deep and 32 inches wide. It's mobile home approved, but not in a sleeping room, and only with the OAK-3 outside air kit and the unit grounded to the home's frame.

The Quadra-Fire Story

Quadra-Fire was founded by Alan Trusler and Dan Henry as Aladdin Steel Products near Colville, Washington, in 1978–79. Its Quad-Burn system, introduced in 1986, burns wood smoke in four zones without a catalytic combustor. HON Industries (now HNI) bought the company in 1998, and since 2023 Quadra-Fire stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, with the original model names.
