Who It's For

An open wood fireplace is a lot of tending for very little heat, and most of it goes up the chimney. A wood fire ought to warm the room, not just the flue. You need an insert that burns wood cleanly and takes care of the air for you. If you love a real wood fire but not the constant adjusting, the Forge & Flame Expedition II is the wood insert to look at. It features Quadra-Fire burn technology, and it turns the fireplace into a heater.

What Makes It Special

Its automatic combustion control gives a new fire extra air to get going, then settles it down on its own. Load it, set it, and walk away.

A fan comes standard to push warm air into the room. The firebox takes logs up to 20 inches, and a full load burns for roughly five to seven hours. The front door is cast iron with an arched top.

Possible Downsides

If you want a wood fire that heats the room without constant tending, the Forge & Flame Expedition II is the right decision. The crackle and smell of a wood fire come back, and the room is warm too.

Choose a medium or large metal surround, a metal surround with cast trim, or a custom surround, and add a hearth extension, an outside air kit, a Fillmore or Ozark wood mantel shelf, or a non-combustible shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much heat does the Forge & Flame Expedition II wood insert put out?

The Forge & Flame Expedition II, featuring Quadra-Fire burn technology, heats about 1,400–2,800 square feet. It's rated 71% efficient on the higher heating value and is certified to the 2020 EPA wood heater standard at 1.9 grams per hour.

How does automatic combustion control work on the Expedition II?

Activate the start-up air control by pushing it back until it stops and pulling it forward until it stops, when you light a fire and again each time you reload. ACC gives the new fire extra air, then settles it down on its own. There's no burn rate dial, so you set heat by how many logs you load and whether they're split.

How long are the logs and burn times in the Expedition II?

Its 2.37 cubic foot firebox takes logs up to 20 inches long, and a full load burns for roughly 5–7 hours. That means you'll usually want to reload before bed rather than count on an overnight burn.

What size fireplace opening does the Expedition II need?

The standard minimum opening is 23-3/8 inches tall, 32 inches wide at the front, 23-7/8 inches wide at the back, and 18-1/4 inches deep with the steel surround. You'll also need a full-length insulated 6-inch stainless steel chimney liner, which UL 1390 requires.

Can the Expedition II go in a factory-built fireplace or a mobile home?

No to both. It's approved only for masonry fireplaces with masonry chimneys, including ones with metal heat-circulating parts, but not listed factory-built or zero-clearance fireplaces. The manual also states it's not approved for mobile homes in the US or Canada.

Does the Expedition II blower need electricity?

Yes. The standard blower plugs into household power, drawing 1.4 amps at 115 volts, and on AUTO a snap disc turns it on and off with the stove's temperature, while MANUAL leaves it up to you. The manual recommends leaving it off for the first 30 minutes of a cold start.

What hearth protection does the Expedition II need?

In the US, the hearth extension must reach 17-1/2 inches in front (19-1/2 inches in Canada). If the bottom of the insert sits less than 4.5 inches above that extension, it needs thermal protection with an R-value of 2.9; at 4.5 inches or more, ember protection alone is enough.

Does the Expedition II come with a surround, and what can I add?

A surround is required but sold separately. Choose a medium or large metal surround, a metal surround with cast trim, or a custom surround to frame the arched cast iron door, then add a Fillmore or Ozark wood mantel, a non-combustible shelf, or an outside air kit.

The Quadra-Fire Story

Quadra-Fire was founded by Alan Trusler and Dan Henry as Aladdin Steel Products near Colville, Washington, in 1978–79. Its Quad-Burn system, introduced in 1986, burns wood smoke in four zones without a catalytic combustor. HON Industries (now HNI) bought the company in 1998, and since 2023 Quadra-Fire stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, with the original model names.
