Who It's For
Opening a stove door to reload can send smoke into the room and ash onto the hearth. You need a stove that reloads cleanly and does more than heat. The Forge & Flame Dauntless, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for the household that gathers around the stove, cooks on it, and wants steady heat through the night. A front-load stove makes a mess; this one loads from the top.
What Makes It Special
A cast iron griddle top gives you a real cooking surface, and an optional cooking grill takes it further.
Top loading keeps smoke and ash inside and lets you fit more wood. A swing-out ash pan lets you clear ashes even when the stove is hot. A thermostatic control and an included catalyst help hold a long, even burn of up to 10 hours.
Choose classic black or one of three enamel colors: twilight, brown majolica, or bordeaux.
Possible Downsides
- The fan is a separate kit.
- Logs over 16 inches will not fit.
If you want a stove that heats the room and doubles as a cooktop, the Forge & Flame Dauntless is the right decision. Pancakes on the griddle, warm feet on the floor, and the whole family in one room.
Choose classic black, twilight, brown majolica, or bordeaux, and add the cooking grill, a fan kit, stove gloves, a thermometer, a trivet, a child safety screen, a cast iron steamer, or a wood box.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much of my home can the Forge & Flame Dauntless-C heat?
The Dauntless-C is rated to heat about 900–1,850 sq ft. It's a cast iron wood stove with a 1.8 cu ft firebox, and its EPA-tested heat output runs from 13,600 to 21,400 BTU per hour.
Can I actually cook on the Dauntless-C?
Yes. The top is a cast iron griddle you can cook on, and an optional cooking grill sits under the griddle to give you a more versatile cooking surface. The manual warns that running the griddle continuously above 650°F can damage the cast iron or enamel finish.
How do you load wood and clear ashes on the Dauntless-C?
Most people load from the top: the griddle lifts so you can drop in logs up to 16 inches, which keeps smoke and ash inside and lets you fit more wood. Front doors open too. A swing-out ash pan lets you remove ashes even while the stove is hot.
How long does a load last, and how do I control the heat?
Expect about 7–10 hours per load. You set one primary air lever, and a bimetallic thermostat holds the heat output steady through the burn. A separate damper is either open for starting and reloading or closed to send smoke through the catalyst, with no in-between positions.
What does the catalyst in the Dauntless-C do?
The included catalytic combustor burns off smoke and particulates at 500–600°F, about half the temperature unaided secondary combustion needs, and the manual says it can raise efficiency up to 15% on low burn. The stove is EPA certified at 1.7 g/hr, with 81% LHV and 75% HHV tested efficiency.
Can the Dauntless-C be installed in a mobile home?
Yes, in the USA only; it isn't approved for mobile homes in Canada. It can't go in a sleeping room, it needs an outside combustion air inlet, and it must be bolted down with the supplied mobile home brackets and grounded to the frame with #8 copper wire.
How much clearance and floor protection does the Dauntless-C need?
With a top exit, it needs 14 inches to the side and back walls on single wall pipe, or 12 inches on double wall pipe, which is a US-only clearance. In the US, the noncombustible floor protector must reach 16 inches in front of the glass and 8 inches to each side of the loading door; Canada requires 18 inches in front.
Will the Dauntless-C keep heating if the power goes out?
Yes. The air control, thermostat, and damper are all manual, so the stove doesn't depend on electricity. The only electrical part is the optional variable-speed fan kit, rated 115V, 60Hz, 1.1 amps, which is sold separately.
The Vermont Castings Story
Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
