Who It's For
Small spaces deserve good-looking heat, and the people heating them should not need a lesson to run it. You need a compact cast iron stove that just works. The Forge & Flame Aspen C3, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for the cabin, the small living room, or the four-season porch where simplicity matters. A stove with levers and dampers asks you to learn it; this one asks you to load it.
What Makes It Special
There are no manual controls. Continuous combustion technology manages the air for you, so the fire burns cleanly from start to finish.
The top plate is a cooking surface, handy for a kettle or a pot of soup on a snowy day. Leg levelers keep it steady on an uneven hearth, and it is ready for outside air without an extra adapter.
A load can run up to 10 hours, and the firebox fits logs up to 16 inches.
Possible Downsides
- It is a small stove sized for intimate spaces, not a whole large house.
- It comes in classic black only.
If you want a small cast iron stove that runs without a single adjustment, the Forge & Flame Aspen C3 is the right decision. The kettle is warm, the room is cozy, and you never touched a lever.
Add the decorative ceramic glass cook top with the vintage logo.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size space is the Forge & Flame Aspen C3 meant to heat?
The Aspen C3 is rated for about 900–1,750 sq ft and is sized for cabins, small living rooms, and four-season porches rather than a whole large house. It has a compact 1.25 cu ft cast iron firebox with an EPA-tested output of 24,300 BTU per hour.
If the Aspen C3 has no controls, how does it regulate the fire?
Its Continuous Combustion Control (C3) uses a heat-activated thermostat that closes the air shutter as the fire builds and opens it as the fire fades, with no electricity involved. Separate preheated secondary air burns the gases above the fuel bed. It's certified as a single burn rate heater and isn't approved for use with a flue damper.
How long does a load of wood last in the Aspen C3, and what size logs fit?
A load burns about 7–10 hours, and the firebox takes logs up to 16 inches. Wood loads north-south, front to back, which makes refueling easier, and the manual recommends adding wood while the embers are still hot.
Can I cook on top of the Aspen C3?
Yes. The cast iron top plate works as a cooking surface for a kettle or a pot of soup. You can also add the optional decorative ceramic glass cook top with the vintage logo.
How much clearance does the Aspen C3 need from walls?
With single wall pipe it needs 14 inches to a side wall, 8 inches to the back wall, and 6 inches in a corner; double wall pipe cuts the back and corner clearances to 3 inches. The floor protector extends 8 inches at the sides and rear, plus 16 inches in front in the US or 18 inches in front in Canada.
Is the Aspen C3 approved for mobile homes?
Yes, it's approved for mobile homes in the USA and Canada, but not in a sleeping room. The stove must be bolted to the floor and grounded to the frame with #8 copper wire, outside combustion air must be provided through its 3-inch inlet, and the chimney must be UL103 HT listed or use a full-length 6-inch UL-1777 liner.
Is the Aspen C3 EPA certified?
Yes. The Aspen C3 is certified to the 2020 EPA particulate standard at 1.76 g/hr, with tested efficiency of 77% LHV and 71% HHV. It burns natural wood only, best when split and air-dried under cover for at least a year.
What upkeep does the Aspen C3 need?
Check ash every day and remove it before it reaches the bottom of the door, typically every one to three days. Inspect the chimney connector every two weeks in heating season, check the door handle and leg bolts every two months, and do a spring cleaning of the gaskets, paint, and chimney each year.
The Vermont Castings Story
Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
