Who It's For

Some homes need more than a small stove but not the biggest one on the floor. You want midsize heat in a stove that looks like furniture. The Forge & Flame Encore, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for the living room or great room where the stove is a centerpiece and wood is the main heat. A plain steel box heats the room; this one dresses it.

What Makes It Special

A ceramic catalyst and thermostatic air control stretch a load to as much as 12 hours of even heat.

Top loading keeps smoke contained, and the swing-out ash pan lets you clean up while the stove is still hot. Bottom and flue heat shields are included. Logs up to 18 inches fit.

Pick classic black, twilight, majolica brown, bordeaux, or sand, with traditional doors, or classic black transition doors.

Possible Downsides

If you want a cast iron stove that heats the main floor and looks the part, the Forge & Flame Encore is the right decision. Guests ask about the stove before they take off their coats.

Choose a finish and door style, and add a transition door kit, warming shelf, fan kit, mobile home bracket kit, outside air adapter, safety screen, steamer, trivet, gloves, thermometer, or wood box.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large an area can the Forge & Flame Encore heat?

The Encore is rated for about 1,200–2,400 sq ft, which suits a main floor, living room, or great room. It's a catalytic cast iron wood stove with a 2.3 cu ft firebox and an EPA-tested output of 12,800 to 37,100 BTU per hour.

How long does a load burn in the Encore, and how is the heat controlled?

Expect about 8–12 hours from a load. You set one primary air lever and a bimetallic thermostat holds the output steady, while a separate damper is either open for lighting and reloading or closed to route smoke through the catalyst.

What does the catalyst do, and how long does it last?

The Encore's ceramic catalytic combustor burns smoke and particulates at 500–600°F for a cleaner, longer burn, and the stove is EPA certified at 1.1 g/hr with 76.8% tested HHV efficiency. The manual expects a combustor to stay active two to six years and says to inspect it two to three times a year.

How do I load wood and remove ashes from the Encore?

You can load through the top, which keeps smoke contained, or through the front doors, and logs up to 18 inches fit. The swing-out ash pan lets you clean up while the stove is still hot, and the cast iron griddle top doubles as a cooking surface.

What finishes and door styles are available on the Encore?

Traditional doors come in classic black, twilight, majolica brown, bordeaux, or limited-edition sand. Classic black is also offered with transition doors, and enamel transition doors are an added kit. Warming shelves and the 8-inch oval flue collar come in classic black, twilight, majolica brown, and bordeaux.

What venting and clearances does the Encore need?

It vents through its 6-inch flue collar, or an 8-inch connector with the optional 8-inch oval flue collar, from the top or rear. With single-wall pipe, the back wall clearance is 15 inches on a 6-inch connector or 20 inches on an 8-inch one, and double-wall pipe cuts it to 11 inches. The floor protector extends 16 inches in front in the US, or 18 in Canada.

Is the Encore approved for mobile homes?

Yes, in US mobile homes and Canadian transportable buildings, but not in a sleeping room. It must be bolted down, grounded to the frame with #8 copper wire, supplied with outside combustion air, fitted with the Mobile Home Bracket Kit, and vented into a UL103 HT chimney or a full-length 6-inch UL-1777 liner. The bracket kit and outside air adapter are sold separately.

Does the Encore need a fan or electricity to heat?

No. You set the primary air lever and damper by hand, and the bimetallic thermostat works without power, so the stove heats on its own. The fan is a separate kit: a variable-speed, heat-activated fan rated 115V, 60Hz, 1.1 amps that helps push warm air into the room.

The Vermont Castings Story

Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
