Who It's For

Larger masonry fireplaces are usually wider than they are tall, and an insert built for a squarer opening leaves the edges dark. You need a fire as wide as the fireplace it sits in. If your fireplace is a broad, low opening, the Kozy Heat Chaska 34 stretches a log fire across more than 30 inches of glass. A narrower insert leaves the fireplace looking half-used; this one fills it.

What Makes It Special

The Chaska 34 sets a log fire behind more than 30 inches of landscape glass, so the flame runs the width of the opening the way the original wood fire did.

The log set, the ember-bed light, the fan, and the remote are all included. The fan carries heat into a large living room and the dining area next to it, and at 73% (EnerGuide), most of the gas you pay for becomes heat in your room instead of heat up the chimney.

It is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you have a wide fireplace and want a log fire that fills it, the Chaska 34 is the right decision. The broad old fireplace finally holds a fire worth gathering around.

Choose a black, brushed stainless, antique copper overlay, black prairie, or vintage bronze arched mission front; a black shroud in three sizes or a blank shroud; optional black brick, Canyon Creek, or black glass firebox panels; and a low mantel kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Chaska 34 heat?

It's sized for roughly 850–1,700 sq ft. The manual rates it at 34,000 BTU/h maximum and 18,500 minimum on both natural gas and propane. The brochure lists its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency at 73.22% on natural gas and 76.49% on propane.

Will the Chaska 34 fit in my existing fireplace?

It needs an opening at least 23-1/2 inches high, 33-1/2 inches wide at the front, 24-1/2 inches wide at the back, and 16-3/8 inches deep. The fireplace has to be a wood-burning masonry or factory-built fireplace. Firebrick and fastened-in smoke shelves or baffles can be removed to reach the minimum, but the existing fireplace's sheet metal can't be cut.

What chimney liner and venting does the Chaska 34 need?

It vents up the existing chimney through two 3-inch flexible liners, one for exhaust and one for outside combustion air, ending at an approved cap. Kozy Heat's #816 kit includes 36 feet of expandable 3-inch pipe and a round cap, and BDM, Amerivent, Metal Fab, Selkirk, Simpson Dura-Vent, and ICC systems are also approved. The chimney must be 10 to 50 feet tall, at least 7 inches inside (factory-built) or 6 x 8 inches (masonry), and it can't serve any other appliance.

What comes with the Chaska 34, and what do I need to order?

The 8-piece log set, the ember-bed light, the fan, and the remote come with it. You'll also need a screen front and a shroud—the brochure lists the front as required and says the shroud is required for installation. Fronts include black, brushed stainless, or antique copper overlay rectangular, black prairie, and vintage bronze arched mission, and shrouds come in black at 27 x 40, 30 x 44, or 33 x 46 inches, or as a blank shroud. Black brick, Canyon Creek, or black glass firebox panels are optional.

Will the Chaska 34 work during a power outage?

Yes, the burner can still light and run on its backup battery pack, which takes four AA batteries (not included). The fan and the ember light won't run on battery power, so they stop until power returns. Normally it needs a 120-volt, 6-amp supply that's always on, with no switch on that circuit.

What can the Chaska 34 remote control do?

The included Proflame 2 remote turns the fire on and off and adjusts the flame, the fan, and the ember light, each through six levels. It can also run as a room thermostat, including a smart mode that turns the flame down as the room reaches your set temperature. A Sit Proflame wall-mount transmitter is available if you'd like a control on the wall.

Can the Chaska 34 run on propane?

Yes, but it ships set up for natural gas, so propane takes a certified conversion kit (LCK-CK34L-S in the parts list), sold separately and installed by a qualified person before the logs and light kit go in. The option list includes a propane valve step motor kit. On propane it keeps the same 34,000 BTU/h maximum input.

How much clearance does the Chaska 34 need for a mantel, TV, or hearth?

A 9-inch-deep combustible mantel can start 16 inches above the top of the insert, or a 6-inch mantel can start at 11 inches with the low mantel kit on the rectangular or prairie screen front. Side walls need 6 inches, and the ceiling must be at least 55 inches above the fireplace enclosure floor. If combustible flooring runs flush in front, add non-combustible hearth protection at least 7 inches deep, 33-1/2 inches long, and 1/2 inch high, or raise the insert 1 inch. The manual doesn't give a separate TV rule, so plan any TV around these clearances.

Can the Chaska 34 go in a bedroom or a mobile home?

Yes to both. The manual says it may be installed in a bedroom, and in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home where local codes don't prohibit it. It still has to go into an existing wood-burning fireplace and chimney that meet the size requirements.
