Who It's For

A mid-size wood fireplace that sits cold most of the winter is a familiar story: too much work to light, too drafty to ignore. You need an insert that turns that opening into steady, push-button heat with a log fire that still looks like one. If that is your fireplace, the Kozy Heat Chaska 29 fits it, and it lets you choose how it starts. A gas log set would still send most of its heat up the chimney; this insert keeps it in the room.

What Makes It Special

There are two versions. The electronic-ignition model lights only when you turn it on, so no pilot flame burns between fires, and it comes with a remote and an ember-bed light. The standing-pilot model keeps a small flame lit, but it runs with no electricity at all, so the fire keeps making heat through a power outage.

Both come with a log set and a fan that pushes warm air out into the room. That covers a living room and the space around it.

Both are approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you want a real-looking log fire in a mid-size fireplace and a say in how it starts, the Chaska 29 is the right decision. A cold February night becomes the excuse to sit by the fire.

Choose a black, brushed stainless, antique copper overlay, black prairie, or vintage bronze arched mission front; a black shroud in three sizes or a blank shroud; optional Canyon Creek, black brick, or black glass firebox panels; a low mantel kit; and remotes, wall switches, and thermostats for the standing-pilot model.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much heat does the Kozy Heat Chaska 29 gas insert put out?

The electronic-ignition Kozy Heat Chaska 29 Log has an input rating of 30,500 BTU/h on natural gas and 30,000 BTU/h on propane at high, turning down to 16,000 BTU/h on either fuel. The brochure lists the millivolt version at 28,500 BTU/h on natural gas and 29,000 BTU/h on propane. It's sized for about 750–1,500 sq ft, and the brochure gives EnerGuide P.4 efficiency of 72.27% (natural gas) and 72.36% (propane) for the log model, and 71.26% and 71.33% for the millivolt model.

Will the Chaska 29 fit my existing fireplace?

Your fireplace opening needs to be at least 19-1/4 inches high, 29-1/2 inches wide at the front, 18-7/8 inches wide at the back, and 15 inches deep. It's approved for masonry and factory-built wood-burning (solid fuel) fireplaces, and the chimney must be at least 7 inches inside diameter for a factory-built chimney or 6x8 inches for masonry, between 10 and 50 feet tall. Smoke shelves, shields, and baffles held by fasteners may be removed to make room, but cutting the existing fireplace's sheet metal isn't allowed. Once converted, the fireplace can't burn wood again unless the original parts are replaced and the authority having jurisdiction re-approves it.

Does the Chaska 29 need a chimney liner?

Yes. It vents through two 3-inch flexible aluminum pipes, one for exhaust and one for combustion air, run up the full height of your chimney to a cap on top; Kozy Heat's #816 kit includes 36 feet of expandable 3-inch pipe and the cap, and BDM, Amerivent, Metal Fab, Olympia, Selkirk, Simpson Dura-Vent, and ICC systems are also approved. Where the chimney no longer reaches the roofline, an approved adapter can switch to 4 x 6-5/8-inch co-axial pipe, as long as the total run stays between 10 and 50 feet. The existing damper is blocked fully open or removed for the install.

Will the Chaska 29 work during a power outage?

Yes, both versions keep the fire going, but in different ways. The electronic-ignition model runs on its backup battery pack (four AA batteries, not included) when the power goes out, though only the burner works—the fan and light stop until power returns. The millivolt standing-pilot version doesn't need household electricity to run its fire, so it keeps making heat through an outage.

What can the Chaska 29's remote control do?

The electronic-ignition model comes with a remote that sets six flame levels and six fan speeds, works as a room thermostat, and has a smart-thermostat mode that turns the flame down as the room reaches your set point. It also dims the ember light through six levels and can switch the pilot between intermittent and continuous. The millivolt model uses a wall switch instead, and you can add an on/off remote, a remote with thermostat, a wireless on/off wall switch, or a wall-mount or wireless wall-mount thermostat.

Can the Chaska 29 run on propane?

Yes, but it ships for natural gas, and propane takes a separately sold conversion kit (the electronic-ignition model's manual lists LCK-CK29L-S). The option list also shows a propane valve step motor for the electronic-ignition model. A qualified installer should do the conversion before the light kit and logs go in, and the propane input rating is 30,000 BTU/h on high.

What else do I have to order with the Chaska 29?

You'll need a screen front and a shroud—the brochure lists both as required. Front choices are a rectangular front in black, brushed stainless, or antique copper overlay, a black prairie front, or a vintage bronze arched mission front, and the black one-piece shrouds come in 25 x 38, 27-1/2 x 42, and 30 x 44 inches, plus a blank shroud. The log set and fan come with it, while firebox panels and the low mantel kit are optional.

How close can a mantel be to the Chaska 29?

A combustible mantel up to 9 inches deep can start 16 inches above the top of the insert, and deeper mantels go up 1 inch for each extra inch of depth. With the optional low mantel kit on a rectangular or prairie front (CK29-RSF or CK29-PSF), a 6-inch mantel can start 11 inches above the insert. The insert also needs 6 inches to an adjacent sidewall and at least 55 inches from the fireplace floor to the ceiling.

Can the Chaska 29 be installed in a bedroom or a mobile home?

Yes to both, within limits. The manual says the insert may be installed in a bedroom, and in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home where local codes don't prohibit it. In either case it still needs an existing masonry or factory-built wood-burning fireplace and a qualifying chimney to go into.
