Who It's For
When the goal is heat, not decoration, a stove is hard to beat: it stands in the room and sends warmth out from every side. You need a gas stove big enough to carry the main living space through a cold winter. If that is the job, the Kozy Heat Lakefield XL is the larger of Kozy’s two stoves. A small stove takes the chill off; this one heats the floor it stands on.
What Makes It Special
The Lakefield XL has the heat of a large fireplace in a freestanding stove, enough for an open main floor, with a 22-inch window on the fire and traditional legs.
Choose the electronic-ignition model, which lights only when you turn it on, or the standing-pilot model, which runs with no electricity, so it keeps heating through a power outage. An on/off switch sits right on top.
It is approved for bedroom installs, and three screen-front styles and two firebox linings let it lean traditional or plain.
Possible Downsides
- The screen front is a separate, required purchase.
- Fan, remote, and thermostat kits are listed only for the standing-pilot model.
- It is a lot of heat for a small room. For a cabin or a bedroom, see the Oakport.
If you want a stove that can be the main heat for the rooms you live in, the Lakefield XL is the right decision. The furnace runs less, and the stove becomes the center of the house.
Choose a black rectangular full, black prairie, or black arched prairie screen front; black glass or Canyon Creek brick firebox panels; and, for the standing-pilot model, a fan, remote, wall switch, or thermostat.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Lakefield XL gas stove heat?
The Lakefield XL is rated to heat about 1,000–2,000 sq ft, enough to carry an open main floor. The electronic-ignition LXL-22-L burns up to 40,000 BTU/h and down to 22,000 BTU/h on both natural gas and propane. Its EnerGuide (P.4) efficiency is listed at 69%, and the manual approves it for bedrooms.
What do I need to order with the Lakefield XL?
A screen front is required and sold separately. Choose a black rectangular full, prairie, or arched prairie screen front. The eight-piece log set is part of the stove, and black glass or Canyon Creek brick firebox panels are optional upgrades.
Will the Lakefield XL work during a power outage?
Yes. The electronic-ignition model runs on its backup battery pack, which keeps the burner and its flame modulation working, though the fan and light kit won't run on battery power. Kozy Heat says to put the batteries in only during an outage. The standing-pilot model is described as running with no electricity at all; its manual isn't among the sources here.
How do I control the Lakefield XL, and does it have a fan?
The electronic-ignition model comes with a Komfort 8K1 remote with a room thermostat, five flame levels, a 15- to 180-minute shut-off timer, and a child lock. It also runs a fan at three speeds that starts three minutes after the stove lights and keeps running 12 minutes after it shuts off. For the standing-pilot model, a 150 CFM fan kit, on/off and thermostat remotes, wireless wall switches, and wall thermostats are sold as options.
How is the Lakefield XL vented?
It uses 4″ x 6-5/8″ co-axial direct-vent pipe off the top of the stove, through the roof or a wall. A vertical run can be 36″ to 50 feet. For a wall termination the pipe must rise at least 24″, and the horizontal reach grows with the rise: 24″ of horizontal pipe with a 24″ rise, 8 feet with 36″, 12 feet with 48″, and up to 25 feet with a 25-foot rise, using no more than five 90° elbows. Vertical co-axial flex pipe isn't approved.
Can the Lakefield XL sit inside an existing fireplace?
Yes, if it's a masonry fireplace: The manual shows the stove sitting inside an existing masonry fireplace, with no hearth or noncombustible floor required in front, 3/4″ mantel trim allowed from 40-1/2″ above the floor, a 6″ mantel from 44″, and 3″ from the masonry opening to a combustible mantel leg or sidewall. It can vent up the old chimney with a 4″ flex liner in a Class A or masonry chimney of at least 7″ inside diameter, or with 3″ x 3″ co-linear liners in at least a 6″ x 8″ masonry or 7″ Class A chimney, using 10 to 50 feet of liner. Have the chimney inspected first.
What clearances does the Lakefield XL need?
The Lakefield XL needs 3″ from the top of the stove to a side wall and to the back wall, 1-1/2″ from a top corner to a wall, and 36-1/4″ from its top to the ceiling, with at least 68-1/4″ from floor to ceiling. A horizontal vent pipe needs 2-1/4″ to the ceiling. It can also sit in an alcove, and it has to stand on wood, a noncombustible surface, or a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the stove.
Can the Lakefield XL run on propane?
Yes, but it ships for natural gas, and the conversion kit is sold separately. For the electronic-ignition model, the parts list names the propane conversion kit (LCK-LX22L-D) and a propane valve stepper motor (DEX-SMLP). The manual rates it at the same 40,000 BTU/h maximum and 22,000 BTU/h minimum on propane as on natural gas.
Is the Lakefield XL approved for mobile homes?
Yes, where local codes don't prohibit it. The manual approves an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (marked USA only) or mobile home. At 207 pounds, it needs a level floor that can carry the stove and its venting.
