Who It's For

A wide masonry fireplace in a modern room is a mismatch when the only gas options look like a campfire. You need the width and the heat of a big insert without the log-cabin look. If your fireplace is broad and your style is not rustic, the Kozy Heat Chaska 34 Glass is built for it. A log insert of the same size heats the room just as well; this one matches a contemporary space.

What Makes It Special

The flames rise from a bed of reflective crushed glass or glass crystals across more than 30 inches of glass, backed by black enamel firebox panels that reflect the color. An accent light keeps the media lit.

The fan and remote are included. It carries heat into a large living room and the space beyond it, at 73% (EnerGuide), so most of the gas becomes heat in your room.

It is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you want a wide, modern fire in the fireplace you already have, the Chaska 34 Glass is the right decision. The fireplace wall becomes the most current thing in the room.

Choose reflective midnight or reflective copper crushed glass, or seabreeze, black, amber, or glacier crystals; add a beach accent kit; and pick a black, brushed stainless, antique copper overlay, black prairie, or vintage bronze arched mission front with a black or blank shroud and an optional low mantel kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Chaska 34 Glass heat?

It's sized for roughly 850–1,700 sq ft. Kozy Heat's brochure rates the Chaska 34 at 34,000 BTU/h maximum and 18,500 minimum on both natural gas and propane. Its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency is listed at 73.22% on natural gas and 76.49% on propane.

Will the Chaska 34 Glass fit in my existing fireplace?

It needs an opening at least 23-1/2 inches high, 33-1/2 inches wide at the front, 24-1/2 inches wide at the back, and 16-3/8 inches deep. It goes into an existing wood-burning masonry or factory-built fireplace, and its chimney must be at least 7 inches inside (factory-built) or 6 x 8 inches (masonry). If your fireplace is narrower, the Chaska 29 and Chaska 25 need smaller openings.

What chimney liner and venting does the Chaska 34 Glass need?

It vents straight up the existing chimney through dual 3-inch aluminum flexible liners, one for exhaust and one for outside combustion air, so the system is sealed from the room. The brochure lists vertical termination only, with a vent run of 10 to 50 feet. Approved systems include Kozy Heat #816, Simpson Dura-Vent, Selkirk Metalbestos, Ameri-Vent, and ICC.

What do I need to order with the Chaska 34 Glass?

Plan on a screen front, a shroud, and glass media—the brochure lists the front and the media as required and says the shroud is required for installation. Media choices are 1/2-inch crushed glass in reflective midnight or reflective copper, or crystal kits in seabreeze, black, amber, or glacier, with an optional beach accent kit. Shrouds come in black at 27 x 40, 30 x 44, or 33 x 46 inches, or as a blank shroud, and black enamel panels, an accent light, the fan, and the remote come standard.

Will the Chaska 34 Glass work during a power outage?

Mostly, yes. It uses Kozy Heat's electronic ignition system, and the Chaska 34 manual says the burner can light and run on a backup pack of four AA batteries when the power is out. The fan and the accent light don't run on battery power, so they stop until power returns.

What can the Chaska 34 Glass remote control do?

The included Komfort Kontrol remote turns the fire on and off and adjusts the flame height, the fan speed, and the light kit. It also has a thermostat function and lets you switch from intermittent ignition to a continuous pilot. A Sit Proflame wall-mount transmitter is available as an option.

Can the Chaska 34 Glass run on propane?

Yes. The brochure rates the Chaska 34 at the same 34,000 BTU/h maximum and 18,500 minimum on propane as on natural gas. The Chaska 34 manual says the insert is manufactured for natural gas and converts with a kit sold separately, and the option list includes a propane valve step motor for this model.

How much clearance does the Chaska 34 Glass need for a mantel or TV above it?

A 9-inch-deep combustible mantel needs 16 inches above the top of the insert, and it can get 1 inch deeper for every added inch of height. The low mantel kit, which fits only the rectangular or prairie screen front, lets a 6-inch mantel start 11 inches above the top, or a 9-inch mantel at 14 inches. Combustible side walls need 6 inches, and the ceiling must be at least 55 inches above the fireplace enclosure floor. Neither the manual nor the brochure gives a separate TV rule, so plan any TV around these clearances with your installer.

Can the Chaska 34 Glass go in a bedroom or a mobile home?

The Chaska 34 manual says yes to both. It may be installed in a bedroom, and in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home where local codes don't prohibit it. It still has to go into an existing wood-burning fireplace and chimney that meet the size requirements.
