Who It's For
Adding a fireplace can turn into a long list of separate parts: logs, lights, fan, remote, trim. You want a traditional log fireplace where most of those decisions are already made. If you would rather pick a front and be done, the Kozy Heat Springfield 36 is built that way. Other fireplaces ask you to assemble the package; this one ships with it.
What Makes It Special
The log set, ember-bed light, fan, remote, and finishing trim all come in the box. The only required choice is the front.
At 78% (EnerGuide), it is one of the most efficient fireplaces Kozy Heat makes, so most of the gas you pay for turns into heat in a living room and the space around it.
Optional heat transfer kits can carry some of that warmth to another room.
Possible Downsides
- There are only two front styles, black rectangular or vintage bronze arched mission.
- It ships set up for natural gas. Running it on propane takes an add-on valve motor.
If you want a traditional fireplace without a long list of decisions, the Springfield 36 is the right decision. The fireplace goes in, and the evenings by it start right away.
Choose a black rectangular full front or a vintage bronze arched mission front; optional black brick or black glass firebox panels; and interior or exterior heat transfer kits.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Springfield 36 heat?
It's rated to warm about 900–1,750 sq ft. The burner runs from 35,000 BTU/h down to 18,000 BTU/h on either natural gas or propane. Kozy Heat lists its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency at 77.5% on natural gas and 76.86% on propane, and the included fan helps push that heat into the room.
What comes with the Springfield 36, and what do I still need to buy?
The log set, ember-bed lighting, fan, remote, and a finishing trim kit come with it. A screen front is required and sold separately; the order options here list a black rectangular full front and a vintage bronze arched mission front. Black brick or black glass firebox panels are optional, since the firebox comes standard in black.
How is the Springfield 36 vented?
It's a direct vent fireplace built for 5-inch by 8-inch co-axial pipe, run vertically from 3 to 50 feet or out a wall. With 6 inches of rise it can go up to 24 inches horizontally, 12 inches of rise allows 10 feet, and 24 inches allows 16 feet. It can also use Kozy Heat's #800 Series flexible vent for horizontal terminations, step down to 4-inch by 6-5/8-inch pipe after a 24-inch rise, or reline a sound existing chimney with a 4-inch flex liner or 3-inch co-linear liners.
Will the Springfield 36 work during a power outage?
Yes, if you add batteries to its backup pack when the power goes out. Normally it runs on 120-volt power, and on battery backup the burner still lights and adjusts, but the fan and the ember-bed light don't run. The manual says to install the backup batteries only during an outage and not leave them in the pack.
What can the Springfield 36 remote do?
The included Komfort 8K1 remote works as a room thermostat, adjusting the flame as the room nears your set temperature. It also sets five flame levels, three fan speeds, four light levels, and a shut-off timer from 15 minutes to three hours, and it has a child lock. For safety, the system turns the burner off on its own after 8 hours of continuous operation.
Can the Springfield 36 run on propane?
Yes. It ships set up for natural gas and converts with Kozy Heat's propane conversion kit (#LCK-SF36-D), installed by a qualified installer. The manual says it's easier to convert before framing, and to finish the conversion before the light kit and logs go in. The order options also list a propane valve step motor kit.
How close can a mantel or TV be to the Springfield 36?
Combustible 3/4-inch trim can start 35 inches above the fireplace enclosure floor, and a 4-inch-deep combustible mantel 37 inches above it, with deeper mantels stepping up 1 inch for every extra inch of depth. For a TV, Kozy Heat's tests kept TV surface temperatures at or below 150°F when a 4-1/4-inch-deep recess is built above the fireplace. The manual still makes the TV location the homeowner's call, so check your TV maker's limits.
How much space does the Springfield 36 need, and where can it go?
Plan on a framed opening 36-3/4 inches wide, 33-1/2 inches tall, and 21 inches deep, with at least 29-1/4 inches from the top of the fireplace to the ceiling and 6 inches from its sides to a parallel sidewall. It's approved for bedrooms and for covered outdoor spaces, where it's rated to run from 40°F to 110°F. Up to two heat transfer kits can send some of its warmth to another room or outside, though using two rules out the shortest horizontal vent run.
Can the Springfield 36 go in a mobile or manufactured home?
Yes, where local codes allow it. The manual approves it for an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or a mobile home, and it doesn't call for a separate mobile-home kit. The standard installation rules still apply, including a level floor that can carry the fireplace and venting, with the unit on wood or a non-combustible surface rather than carpet or linoleum.
