Who It's For

In a large, modern great room, a fireplace under five feet wide can read as an afterthought. You want a fire long enough to be the architecture of the room. If you are designing a wall around the fireplace, the Kozy Heat Callaway 72 is the one built for that. A shorter linear decorates the wall; this one defines it.

What Makes It Special

Nearly 73 inches of flame rise from crushed glass or lava rock, with logs, birch, rock, or a beach kit as optional accents. A top light, a black safety screen, and a remote come included.

It has the heat to match its size, enough for a great room or an open main floor, and the burner turns down for a calmer fire on mild nights.

With the optional heat-management kit, Kozy Heat says a TV can hang above it and finish materials can run to its edge. Optional heat transfer kits carry warmth to another room. It is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you want the fireplace to be the defining feature of a big modern room, the Callaway 72 is the right decision. Every seat in the great room faces the fire.

Choose reflective midnight or reflective copper crushed glass or lava rock on the burner; crushed glass, lava rock, black sand, vermiculite, or black glass around the perimeter; traditional or birch logs, rock accents, or a beach accent kit; Chicago brick, ledgestone, or black glass firebox panels; a vintage bronze mission, gallery, one-piece, or four-piece black surround; and an optional fan, heat-management kit, and heat transfer kits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Callaway 72 heat?

It's rated to warm about 1,250–2,500 sq ft, enough for a great room or an open main floor. The burner runs up to 49,500 BTU/h on natural gas (49,000 on propane) and turns down to 25,000 BTU/h (24,500 on propane). Kozy Heat lists its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency at 73.77% on natural gas and 73.57% on propane.

How is the Callaway 72 vented?

It's direct vent on 5-inch by 8-inch co-axial pipe, and it can run straight up anywhere from 3 to 50 feet. Going out a wall takes some rise first: On natural gas, 24 inches of rise allows 24 inches of horizontal run, 36 inches allows 48 inches, and 48 inches allows 6 feet, and longer runs up to 25 feet up plus 25 feet across fit within the manual's combination chart. The optional Kozy Power Vent (#KPV) is available for horizontal terminations only.

Can the Callaway 72 run on propane?

Yes. It ships for natural gas and converts with the propane conversion kit (#LCK-CW72-SPB), installed by a qualified installer, ideally before the fireplace is framed in. Propane also needs more rise before a wall termination: 36 inches of rise allows up to 24 inches of horizontal run, 48 inches allows 48 inches, and 60 inches allows 8 feet. The order options list a propane valve step motor as well.

Can I mount a TV above the Callaway 72?

Yes, and the manual addresses it directly: Kozy Heat's tests kept surface temperatures at or below 150°F when a 4-1/4-inch-deep recess is built above the fireplace. In a standard install, 3/4-inch trim can start 16-1/2 inches above the finishing edge and a 6-inch-deep mantel 20 inches above it. A vented cavity or Komfort Zone Kit drops the 6-inch mantel clearance to zero and allows combustible wall finish up to 1 inch thick over the required non-combustible facing. The manual still leaves the TV location to the homeowner, so check your TV's heat limits.

Will the Callaway 72 work during a power outage?

The burner will. It normally runs on 120-volt power, and a backup pack with four AA batteries (not included) keeps it lighting during an outage. The optional fans don't run on battery backup, so the heat comes from the fire alone until the power's back.

What comes with the Callaway 72, and what do I have to order?

The safety barrier screen, top light kit, and remote are included. Burner media is a required separate purchase, and most perimeter media kits take two per unit on a fireplace this long. Logs, accent kits, firebox panels, surrounds, the fan kit, and heat-management kits are optional.

Does the Callaway 72 have a blower, and can it heat other rooms?

A fan kit is optional; it's two 75 CFM fans with speed control on the remote. To move heat elsewhere, it accepts a Komfort Zone Kit (#KZK-072 or #KZK-1510) that redistributes heat through plenums, or up to two heat transfer kits that send heat to another interior space or outside. A vented cavity can also discharge warm air into an adjacent room through a 2-inch by 70-inch opening at the rear of the chamber.

Can the Callaway 72 go in a mobile or manufactured home?

Yes, where local codes allow it. The manual approves it for an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or a mobile home. It doesn't call for a separate mobile-home kit, so the standard installation rules apply, including a level floor strong enough to carry the fireplace and venting.

How big a framed opening does the Callaway 72 need?

Plan on 86-1/2 inches wide, 48-5/8 inches tall, and 22 inches deep (26 inches deep with Metal-Fab pipe), inside an enclosure at least 79-1/4 inches tall. A standard install needs 6 inches from the finishing edge to an adjacent sidewall, which drops to zero with a vented cavity or Komfort Zone Kit. It's approved for bedrooms, and it can go in a covered outdoor space with the outdoor kit, rated for use from 40°F to 110°F.
