Who It's For

Linear fireplaces usually come big, and a five-foot fire can overwhelm a bedroom, a den, or a narrow wall. You want the clean modern line in a size that fits the room. If that is your space, the Kozy Heat Callaway 40 is the compact member of the Callaway family. A larger linear can dominate the wall; this one sits in proportion.

What Makes It Special

A 40-inch ribbon of flame rises from your choice of crushed glass or lava rock, with logs, birch, rock, or a beach kit as optional accents. A top light and a black safety screen are included.

The burner turns down to a low glow when you want ambiance more than heat, and on high it warms a living room or a large bedroom.

An optional heat-management kit routes warm air out through grilles, which Kozy Heat says lets you hang a TV above the fireplace and bring finish materials right to its edge. It is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you want a modern linear fire that fits a smaller room, the Callaway 40 is the right decision. The bedroom gets a fire that looks like it belongs in a hotel suite.

Choose reflective midnight or reflective copper crushed glass or lava rock on the burner; crushed glass, lava rock, black sand, vermiculite, or black glass around the perimeter; traditional or birch logs, rock accents, or a beach accent kit; Chicago brick, ledgestone, or black glass firebox panels; a gallery, one-piece, or four-piece black surround; and an optional fan and heat-management kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Callaway 40 heat?

The Callaway 40 is sized for about 800–1,600 sq ft, though your floor plan and insulation decide the real number. It's rated at a maximum of 31,500 BTU/h and turns down to 16,500 BTU/h on both natural gas and propane. The brochure lists its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency at 71.32% on natural gas and 71.44% on propane.

How is the Callaway 40 vented?

It's a direct vent fireplace built for 5 x 8 inch co-axial pipe, and it can terminate horizontally through a wall or vertically through the roof. Vertical runs go from 3 feet up to 50 feet, and the vent can be reduced to 4 x 6-5/8 inch pipe with an approved reducer. Kozy Heat's #KPV power vent is approved for horizontal terminations, but it needs the KPV kit plus the #700-759 control module, which is sold separately. For an existing chimney, the manual allows 4-inch aluminum flex inside a Class A metal chimney of at least 7 inches ID, or 3 x 3 inch co-linear flex inside a masonry chimney of at least 6 x 8 inches ID or a 7-inch ID Class A chimney, after the chimney is inspected.

Can the Callaway 40 run on propane?

Yes. It's manufactured for natural gas, and the #LCK-CW40-SPB propane conversion kit, sold separately, changes it over; the option list shows this as a propane valve step motor. Kozy Heat says it's easier to convert before the fireplace is framed in, because converting afterward means removing the control board. On propane it keeps the same 31,500 BTU/h maximum input.

What do I need to order with the Callaway 40, and what comes with it?

Burner media is a required purchase: reflective midnight or reflective copper crushed glass, or lava rock. The safety screen front, top light kit, and remote come with the fireplace. The fan kit, perimeter media, log or accent kits, firebox panels, and gallery, one-piece, or four-piece black surrounds are optional.

Will the Callaway 40 work during a power outage?

Yes, the burner will. The fireplace normally runs on 120-volt power, but a backup pack of four AA batteries (not included) lets the burner operate when the power goes out. The manual says battery backup runs the burner only, so the top light and the optional fan stay off and you get radiant heat until power returns.

What can the Callaway 40's remote do?

The included Proflame 2 remote turns the fireplace on and off, sets six flame levels, and works as a room thermostat. In Smart mode it turns the flame down as the room reaches your set temperature. It also runs the optional fan through six speeds, dims the top light through six levels, and can switch to a continuous pilot that keeps the firebox warm and the vent drafting.

Can I put a TV and a mantel above the Callaway 40?

Yes, with planning. In a standard install, a 6-inch-deep combustible mantel can start 23-7/8 inches above the finishing edge. With a Komfort Zone Kit or a vented cavity, that mantel can sit right at the finishing edge, and Kozy Heat's tests found surfaces didn't exceed 150°F with a 4-1/4-inch-deep TV recess above the fireplace. Those heat-management options need an enclosure at least 74 inches tall, and the manual leaves the TV's own temperature limits to the homeowner.

What framing and clearances does the Callaway 40 need?

Plan a rough opening 56-1/2 inches wide, 57 inches high, and 22 inches deep, in an enclosure at least 60 inches tall with at least 72 inches from the base of the fireplace to the ceiling. The stand-offs allow 0 inches to framing, the corners need 3 inches, and you need 36 inches clear in front. Floor protection isn't required, and the fireplace can be raised off the floor on a solid, continuous platform.

Can the Callaway 40 go in a bedroom, a mobile home, or a covered outdoor space?

The manual approves it for bedrooms. It may also be installed in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home, where local codes don't prohibit it. Covered outdoor installs are allowed when the fireplace is protected from direct precipitation by a roof overhang at least half as deep as the roofline is high above the fireplace base, and it's approved to operate from 40°F to 110°F.
