Who It's For

Efficient heat is great until the hopper runs dry halfway through a cold night. Fuel should last as long as the weather does. You need a well-matched insert that also carries a good supply of pellets. For a small to medium home, the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch, powered by Harman technology, adds that capacity. Choose it and refills stop setting your schedule.

What Makes It Special

The 24-inch model carries 64.5 lb of pellets, up from 47.5 lb in the 20-inch, with the same efficient heat.

Its 79% rating on the higher heating value means more of each bag warms the room. The face is cast iron with a standard steel surround, a wireless room sensor feeds the touch control, and the insert slides out on a track when it needs service.

Possible Downsides

If you want efficient fireplace heat with fewer refills, the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch is the right decision. The fire keeps going through the night and the room is still warm at breakfast.

Choose from a ceramic log and bracket, a surround extension or custom surround, a flue rough-in support kit, a service rail kit, an outside temperature kit, and zero-clearance kits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space will the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch heat?

The Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch, powered by Harman technology, heats about 1,050–2,100 square feet, which suits a small to medium home. It's rated 79% efficient on the higher heating value and is certified to the 2020 EPA standard at 1.0 gram per hour.

What's the difference between the 24-inch and 20-inch P42i-TC?

The difference is hopper height. The 24-inch model holds 64.5 pounds of pellets versus 47.5 pounds in the 20-inch, with the same efficient heat. It needs a fireplace opening at least 24 inches tall, while the 20-inch version fits a 20-inch opening.

Will the P42i-TC 24-inch fit in my fireplace?

Your opening needs to be at least 24-7/8 inches wide, 15-9/16 inches deep, and 24 inches tall. It can go into a masonry fireplace or a factory-built wood-burning fireplace with the manufactured fireplace kit, and a zero clearance box is offered if you don't have a fireplace at all.

How do the touch control and room sensor work on the P42i-TC?

You set your desired room temperature on the EASY Touch Control mounted on the insert, and a wireless room sensor running on two AA batteries reports the temperature where you sit. If those batteries die, a backup sensor keeps heating, and the screen prompts you when to scrape the burn pot or empty the ash pan.

What happens to the P42i-TC during a power outage?

It stops heating, because its combustion blower needs power. A Harman-approved UPS, the TrippLite INTERNET750U, powers a safe shutdown only, while an approved inverter/charger on a 12-volt deep-cycle battery can run the insert for up to eight hours. When power returns in Automatic mode, it resumes normal operation.

What clearances and hearth protection does the P42i-TC need?

Keep 12 inches from the insert body to a side wall and to a 12-inch-deep mantel, with zero clearance from the surround to 3/4-inch trim. Non-combustible floor protection must reach 6 inches in front of the glass and 6 inches to each side of the door opening, at least 17 inches deep by 30 inches wide.

What venting does the P42i-TC use, and is it approved for manufactured homes?

It uses 4-inch pellet vent: stainless steel flex pipe up an existing masonry or Class A chimney, or type PL pipe in a zero clearance cabinet. In Canada, a continuous 4-inch liner must run from the insert to the top of the chimney. It's approved for manufactured homes when it isn't in a sleeping room and a Harman outside air kit is installed.

What finish and add-ons are available for the P42i-TC?

It comes only in Matte Black, with a cast iron face and a standard steel surround. Add-ons include a surround extension or custom surround, a ceramic log with bracket, a service rail kit and an outside temperature kit, and a factory-built fireplace requires the zero clearance kit.

The Harman Story

Harman was founded by Dane Harman, a welder, who built his first stove in 1978 and started Harman Stove and Welding beside his home in Halifax, Pennsylvania, in 1979. Its pellet stoves grew out of a patented coal stoker, with a bottom-feed burn pot that pushes ash out and a probe that feeds by temperature. Hearth & Home Technologies bought Harman in 2007, and since 2023 its stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, “Powered by Harman Technology.”
