Who It's For

A pellet insert is a great heater, but it needs an existing fireplace to slide into, and plenty of homes don’t have one. You need pellet heat that builds into a wall. The Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch, powered by Harman technology, comes with its zero-clearance box, so it installs in a framed wall with no masonry fireplace behind it. It is for the household that wants that built-in pellet heat and would rather fill the hopper less often. Choose a freestanding stove and you give up floor space; choose this and the heat comes from the wall.

What Makes It Special

The 24-inch model holds 64.5 pounds of pellets, up from 47.5 in the 20-inch, so the fire keeps going longer between fills.

Harman rates it to heat 800 to 2,400 square feet; in most homes, expect 1,050–2,100 sq ft, depending on climate and layout.

The zero-clearance box comes in the package, so the fireplace builds into a framed wall and finishes with tile or stone like any built-in. The P42i-TC inside is built of cast iron and steel, with a wireless room sensor that reads the room and one distribution blower that moves the heat out. Its 79% efficiency rating means more of every bag becomes warmth.

When it needs service, the insert slides out on its track, and the tinted hopper lid shows your fuel level without lifting anything.

Possible Downsides

If you want built-in pellet heat with fewer trips to the pellet bags, the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch is the right decision. You fill it, forget it, and the room is still warm when you walk back in.

Add a ceramic log, a surround extension or custom surround, a flue rough-in support kit, a service rail kit, an outside temperature kit, or an outside air adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space can the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 24-inch pellet fireplace heat?

In most homes, expect it to heat 1,050–2,100 sq ft, depending on your climate and layout. Harman's own rating is broader, at 800 to 2,400 square feet, and the unit is rated 79% efficient (weighted average, higher heating value).

Do I need an existing fireplace to install the P42i-TC 24-inch?

No. It comes with the Harman zero-clearance cabinet, which the installation manual calls the only permissible way to install the P42i-TC without a suitable fireplace. The cabinet builds into a framed wall, and you finish around it with tile or stone like any built-in fireplace.

How often will I have to fill the hopper on the 24-inch model?

Less often than on the 20-inch version: the 24-inch hopper holds 64.5 lb of pellets, compared with 47.5 lb. The feed rate runs from 0.93 to 5.3 lb per hour, so time between fills depends on how hard it's working, and Harman's bottom-up PelletPro feed is designed for 24-hour heating.

What kind of venting does the P42i-TC 24-inch need?

It uses a 4-inch vent. Inside the zero-clearance cabinet, the installer runs type PL pellet vent pipe through an exterior wall or up through the ceiling, and flex pipe isn't approved for that setup. For wall-vented installs, the manual recommends at least 60 inches of vertical pipe to create natural draft.

Will the P42i-TC 24-inch keep heating if the power goes out?

No. The blower and controls run on household power, and when the combustion blower stops, exhaust can seep into the room. The manual recommends a Harman-approved UPS for a safe shutdown, or an approved inverter/charger on a 12-volt deep-cycle battery that can run the unit for up to eight hours.

How do I control the temperature on the 24-inch P42i-TC?

You set it on the Easy Touch control panel, and a wireless room sensor reads the temperature where you mount it, up to 30 feet from the unit. Harman's Exhaust Sensing Probe then adjusts heat output to hold your set temperature within one degree, and the brochure lists a built-in programmable thermostat.

What's included with the P42i-TC 24-inch, and what costs extra?

The zero-clearance cabinet, the distribution blower, and the standard surround come with it, and matte black is the only finish. The ceramic log, surround extension or custom surround up to 60 by 47 inches, service rail kit, flue rough-in support kit, outside temperature kit, and outside air adapter are all extra.

What regular maintenance does the P42i-TC 24-inch need?

Scrape the burn pot every time you add pellets, or at least every 3 bags, and empty the ash pan weekly. Each month, clean the heat exchanger, distribution fan and igniter, and before every heating season do the yearly Total Clean of the combustion fan, venting and door gasket. The Easy Touch control prompts you to scrape, empty the ash pan and do the total clean.

The Harman Story

Harman was founded by Dane Harman, a welder, who built his first stove in 1978 and started Harman Stove and Welding beside his home in Halifax, Pennsylvania, in 1979. Its pellet stoves grew out of a patented coal stoker, with a bottom-feed burn pot that pushes ash out and a probe that feeds by temperature. Hearth & Home Technologies bought Harman in 2007, and since 2023 its stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, “Powered by Harman Technology.”
