Who It's For

A 36-inch fireplace can look lost on the main wall of a large living room, and it can struggle to warm it. You need a traditional fire with enough size to anchor the room and enough heat to fill it. If your plan calls for a classic log fireplace on a big wall, the Kozy Heat Nordik 41 is sized for that room. Go smaller and the fireplace becomes an accent; this one becomes the center of the room.

What Makes It Special

Nearly 38 inches of glass frames a full traditional or birch log set, so the fire holds its own on a large wall and reads from across an open floor plan.

The fan, ember-bed light, top light, and remote are standard. The heat reaches a large living room and the kitchen or dining area beyond it, which lets the furnace run at a lower setting while you are in the room you actually use.

It is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you want a traditional fireplace big enough to anchor the room, the Nordik 41 is the right decision. The big living room finally has a place everyone gravitates to.

Choose traditional or birch logs; a vented rectangular or prairie front, or a black, antique copper, or brushed stainless rectangular front, a black prairie front, or a vintage bronze mission or arched mission front; and black glass, black brick, Chicago brick, ledgestone, or herringbone firebox panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Nordik 41 heat?

It's rated to warm about 1,000–2,000 sq ft. It runs at up to 40,000 BTU/h on either fuel and turns down to 22,000 BTU/h on natural gas or 21,000 on propane. Kozy Heat lists its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency at 70.84% on natural gas and 70.94% on propane.

How is the Nordik 41 vented?

It's a direct-vent fireplace built for 5 x 8-inch co-axial pipe, and it can be reduced to 4 x 6-5/8-inch pipe with an approved reducer. It vents straight up (3 to 50 feet) or out a wall: With 18 inches of vertical pipe the horizontal run can be up to 24 inches, and the longest setup is 25 feet up plus 25 feet across. The optional Kozy Power Vent (#KPV) is approved for horizontal terminations, and the fireplace can also vent up an existing Class A or masonry chimney with a 4-inch flexible liner.

Will the Nordik 41 work during a power outage?

Yes, as long as the backup batteries are fresh. The control module holds four AA batteries (not included) that keep the burner and flame-height adjustment working when the power goes out, but the fan and lights won't run on battery. For everyday use, the fireplace needs a 120-volt, 6-amp supply that stays live at all times with no switch on it.

What remote and thermostat controls come with the Nordik 41?

It comes with a full-function Proflame 2 remote, and a wall-mount transmitter is an option. The remote can run the fireplace as a room thermostat or in a smart thermostat mode that lowers the flame as the room nears your set temperature. It also controls six flame levels, six fan speeds, the top light's brightness, and the ember-bed light, and it can switch the pilot between on-demand and continuous modes.

Can the Nordik 41 run on propane?

Yes, but it's built for natural gas, so propane takes a conversion kit plus a valve stepper motor that's sold separately. The manual says to do the conversion before the light-kit parts and logs go in. On propane the maximum input stays at 40,000 BTU/h, with a 21,000 BTU/h low setting.

Which parts do I need to order with the Nordik 41?

The fan, top light, ember-bed light, and a finishing trim kit come with the fireplace, but a screen front is required and ordered separately. You also choose a traditional or birch log set. Firebox panels in black glass, black brick, Chicago brick, ledgestone, or herringbone are optional, since the manual covers installs with no panel set.

Do some Nordik 41 fronts need a Komfort Zone Kit?

Yes. The full rectangle screen front (black, antique copper, or brushed stainless) and the non-vented black prairie front are approved only when the fireplace has a Komfort Zone Kit (#KZK-038 or #KZK-1510A). The vented rectangle and vented prairie fronts and the vintage bronze mission and arched mission fronts work in any install, with or without the kit.

Can I put a mantel or TV above the Nordik 41?

In a standard install, 3/4-inch mantel trim can start 6-1/2 inches above the top finishing edge and a 6-inch-deep combustible mantel 10 inches above it, and the enclosure must be at least 76 inches tall. For a TV, the manual strongly recommends the Komfort Zone Kit, which sends heat out a plenum above the TV and allows lower mantel clearances, though it raises the minimum chamber height to 82 inches. The manual also leaves the final TV placement to the homeowner and suggests a mantel to deflect heat away from it.

Can the Nordik 41 go in a mobile or manufactured home?

Yes, where local codes allow it. The manual approves it for an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home, and it doesn't call for a separate mobile-home kit. The standard floor rule still applies: It sits on wood or a non-combustible surface, or on a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit if the floor is carpet or tile.
