Who It's For

Building a fireplace into a new wall or a remodel means choosing something you will look at every day for the next twenty years. You want it to look like a classic hearth and work like a heater. If you are after a traditional log fire with a screen front, in a room that has no fireplace today, the Kozy Heat Nordik 36 is that fireplace. A decorative unit gives you the look; this one keeps the room warm through January.

What Makes It Special

The Nordik 36 comes with the fan, an ember-bed light, a top light, and a remote as standard equipment. The fan pushes warm air out into a living room and the space around it, and the two lights keep the logs and embers glowing.

Eight front styles, from vented rectangular and prairie fronts to vintage bronze mission and arched mission, plus five firebox linings, let it match a farmhouse or a formal living room. Some fronts pair with a heat-distribution kit that moves warm air out through vents.

It is approved for bedroom installs.

Possible Downsides

If you want a classic log fireplace in a wall that does not have one, the Nordik 36 is the right decision. The new wall becomes the place the family gathers.

Choose traditional or birch logs; a vented rectangular or prairie front, or a black, antique copper, or brushed stainless rectangular front, a black prairie front, or a vintage bronze mission or arched mission front; and black glass, black brick, Chicago brick, ledgestone, or herringbone firebox panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of my home can the Kozy Heat Nordik 36 heat?

It's rated to warm about 900–1,750 sq ft. It runs at up to 35,000 BTU/h and turns down to 18,000 BTU/h on either natural gas or propane. Kozy Heat lists its EnerGuide P.4 efficiency at 70.41% on natural gas and 71.57% on propane.

How is the Nordik 36 vented?

It's a direct-vent fireplace that uses 4 x 6-5/8-inch co-axial pipe, venting either straight up (3 to 50 feet) or out a wall. Horizontal runs start at 12 inches of vertical pipe, an elbow, and up to 48 inches of horizontal pipe, and can reach 25 feet up plus 25 feet across, with 3 feet deducted for each 90-degree elbow after the first. The optional Kozy Power Vent (#KPV) is approved for horizontal terminations, and the fireplace can also vent up an existing Class A or masonry chimney with a 4-inch flexible liner.

Will the Nordik 36 work during a power outage?

Yes, as long as the backup batteries are fresh. The control module holds four AA batteries (not included) that keep the burner and flame-height adjustment working when the power goes out, but the fan and lights won't run on battery. For everyday use, the fireplace needs a 120-volt, 6-amp supply that stays live at all times with no switch on it.

What remote and thermostat controls come with the Nordik 36?

It comes with a full-function Proflame 2 remote, and a wall-mount transmitter is an option. The remote can run the fireplace as a room thermostat or in a smart thermostat mode that lowers the flame as the room nears your set temperature. It also controls six flame levels, six fan speeds, the top light's brightness, and the ember-bed light, and it can switch the pilot between on-demand and continuous modes.

Can the Nordik 36 run on propane?

Yes, but it's built for natural gas, so propane takes a conversion kit plus a valve stepper motor that's sold separately. The manual says to do the conversion before the light-kit parts and logs go in. On propane the maximum input stays at 35,000 BTU/h.

Which parts do I need to order with the Nordik 36?

The fan, top light, ember-bed light, and a finishing trim kit come with the fireplace, but a screen front is required and ordered separately. You also choose a log set, with traditional logs listed as the standard media and birch logs as an option. Firebox panels in black glass, black brick, Chicago brick, ledgestone, or herringbone are optional, since the manual covers installs with no panel set.

Do some Nordik 36 fronts need a Komfort Zone Kit?

Yes. The full rectangle screen front (black, antique copper, or brushed stainless) and the non-vented black prairie front are approved only when the fireplace has a Komfort Zone Kit (#KZK-036 or #KZK-1510A). The vented rectangle and vented prairie fronts and the vintage bronze mission and arched mission fronts work in any install, with or without the kit.

Can I put a mantel or TV above the Nordik 36?

In a standard install, 3/4-inch mantel trim can start 8 inches above the top finishing edge and a 6-inch-deep combustible mantel 11-1/2 inches above it, and the enclosure must be at least 72 inches tall. For a TV, the manual strongly recommends the Komfort Zone Kit, which sends heat out a plenum above the TV and allows lower mantel clearances, though it raises the minimum chamber height to 82 inches. The manual also leaves the final TV placement to the homeowner and suggests a mantel to deflect heat away from it.

Can the Nordik 36 go in a mobile or manufactured home?

Yes, where local codes allow it. The manual approves it for an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home (USA only) or mobile home, and it doesn't call for a separate mobile-home kit. The standard floor rule still applies: It sits on wood or a non-combustible surface, or on a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the unit if the floor is carpet or tile.
