Who It's For
A pellet insert is a great heater, but it needs an existing fireplace to slide into, and plenty of homes don’t have one. You need pellet heat that builds into a wall. The Forge & Flame P42i-TC 20-inch, powered by Harman technology, comes with its zero-clearance box, so it installs in a framed wall with no masonry fireplace behind it. It is for a small to medium home that wants thermostat-style pellet heat in a new wall, a remodel, or an addition. Choose a freestanding stove and you give up floor space; choose this and the heat comes from the wall.
What Makes It Special
The zero-clearance box is included in the package, so the insert has a ready-made home inside the framing. Finish the wall around it with tile or stone the way you would any built-in fireplace.
Harman rates it to heat 800 to 2,400 square feet; in most homes, expect 1,050–2,100 sq ft, depending on climate and layout.
Inside is Harman’s P42i-TC, built of cast iron and steel, with the standard surround. The wireless room sensor gives the Easy Touch control the temperature where you actually sit, and one distribution blower moves warm air out into the room. Its 79% efficiency rating means more of every bag becomes heat.
Service is simpler, too. The insert rides on a track and slides out for maintenance, and the large hopper’s tinted lid lets you check your pellet level at a glance.
Possible Downsides
- It needs household power. The blower and controls run on electricity.
- Matte black is the only finish. For a porcelain brown option, see the Accentra52i-TC.
- The ceramic log is extra. It is sold separately with its bracket kit.
If you want pellet heat in a room with no fireplace to put an insert in, the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 20-inch is the right decision. The new wall holds a fire, and the room it warms becomes the one everybody uses.
Add a ceramic log, a surround extension or custom surround, a flue rough-in support kit, a service rail kit, an outside temperature kit, or an outside air adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions
How big a space will the Forge & Flame P42i-TC 20-inch pellet fireplace heat?
Plan on about 1,050–2,100 sq ft in most homes, depending on your climate and layout. Harman rates it at 800 to 2,400 square feet, and it's aimed at small to medium homes that want thermostat-style pellet heat in a new wall, a remodel, or an addition.
What's the difference between the 20-inch and 24-inch P42i-TC?
The hopper. The 20-inch is the factory-built shorter hopper configuration, and it holds 47.5 lb of pellets versus 64.5 lb in the 24-inch, so you'll refill it more often. Both share the same 79% efficiency rating, heating capacity, and Easy Touch control.
Can I put the P42i-TC 20-inch in a room that has no fireplace?
Yes. The Harman zero-clearance cabinet comes in the package, and it's the only approved way to install this insert without a fireplace. Once the cabinet is framed in, the installer vents it with type PL pellet pipe through an exterior wall or the ceiling; flex pipe isn't approved there.
Is the 20-inch P42i-TC approved for a manufactured home?
Yes, as long as it's not in a sleeping room and an outside combustion air inlet is provided. The manual requires a Harman outside air kit, grounding to the home's frame, listed Class PL connector pipe, and keeping the structural integrity of the floor, walls, and ceiling intact.
How efficient is the P42i-TC 20-inch, and is it EPA certified?
It's rated 79% efficient on the weighted-average higher heating value scale, or 84% on the lower heating value scale. The P42i-TC is EPA certified at 1.0 grams of emissions per hour and meets the 2020 EPA particulate emission standards.
What should I plan for if my area loses power often?
Plan on a battery backup, because the P42i-TC's blower and controls need household power and a stopped combustion blower can let exhaust into the room. A tested TrippLite INTERNET750U UPS gives a safe shutdown only, while an approved inverter/charger on a 12-volt deep-cycle battery can keep it running for up to eight hours.
Does the 20-inch P42i-TC work with a thermostat?
Yes, it's built around one. The Easy Touch control panel includes a programmable thermostat, and the wireless room sensor mounts on a wall up to 30 feet away so the unit heats to the temperature where you actually sit. A glass hopper lid lets you check your pellet level at a glance.
What finishes and add-ons can I get for the P42i-TC 20-inch?
Matte black is the only finish; for porcelain brown, look at the Accentra52i-TC. The ceramic log is sold separately with its bracket kit, and you can add a surround extension or custom surround, a service rail kit, a flue rough-in support kit, an outside temperature kit, or an outside air adapter.
The Harman Story
Harman was founded by Dane Harman, a welder, who built his first stove in 1978 and started Harman Stove and Welding beside his home in Halifax, Pennsylvania, in 1979. Its pellet stoves grew out of a patented coal stoker, with a bottom-feed burn pot that pushes ash out and a probe that feeds by temperature. Hearth & Home Technologies bought Harman in 2007, and since 2023 its stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, “Powered by Harman Technology.”
