Who It's For
An average-size living room needs dependable heat in every season, including the one with ice storms. You want a midsize gas stove that runs without electricity. The Forge & Flame Stardance, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for the main living area where the owner wants classic cast iron and heat that keeps going no matter what. An electric-start stove waits for the power; this one does not.
What Makes It Special
A standing pilot runs without electricity, so the Stardance keeps heating during an outage. A small pilot flame stays lit between uses.
A ceramic burner behind operable doors and ceramic glass gives a lively, natural-looking fire, with a safety barrier included.
Four finishes: classic black, majolica brown, bordeaux, and sand.
Possible Downsides
- It cannot be sold in New York or Rhode Island; the electronic-ignition Stardance can.
- The fan and remotes are add-ons.
- Propane needs a separate conversion kit.
If you want midsize gas heat you can count on in an outage, the Forge & Flame Stardance is the right decision. The ice storm takes the power, but not the warmth.
Choose classic black, majolica brown, bordeaux, or sand, and add a warming shelf, propane conversion kit, fan kit, vent paint, on/off remote, or thermostat remote.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size room is the Forge & Flame Stardance DV right for?
The Forge & Flame Stardance DV, crafted with Vermont Castings, heats about 700–1,400 square feet, so it fits an average-size living room or main living area. On natural gas it's rated from 20,000 to 28,000 BTU per hour of input.
Does the Stardance DV work when the power is out?
Yes. This version uses a millivolt standing pilot that runs without electricity, so it keeps heating through an outage. The tradeoff is that a small pilot flame stays lit between uses.
Can I buy the Stardance DV in New York or Rhode Island?
No. This standing-pilot Stardance DV can't be sold in New York or Rhode Island, but the Stardance with electronic ignition can. That version uses IntelliFire Touch ignition with battery backup and comes with the fan as standard, while on the Stardance DV the fan is an add-on.
Can the Stardance DV burn propane?
Yes, it runs on natural gas or propane, but propane needs a separate conversion kit. On propane the input range is 21,000 to 25,000 BTU per hour, and the manual says it can't be converted between gases without a certified kit.
How do I turn the Stardance DV on and off?
It comes set up for a wall switch. You can add a hand-held on/off remote or a touch screen hand-held thermostat remote, each with a battery receiver, or wire in a wall thermostat rated for 500 to 750 millivolts.
How is the Stardance DV vented?
It's a direct vent stove that exits through the top. The pipe must rise at least 24 inches before the first elbow, and a horizontal run can extend up to 20 feet. Only HHT SLP or approved DuraVent components may be used.
How close to the wall can I put the Stardance DV, and does it need a hearth pad?
It needs just 4 inches at the rear and sides, and it can go in an alcove up to 48 inches deep, at least 72 inches tall when the minimum vent kit is used. It sits on any rigid floor, while on carpet a metal or wood panel the full size of the stove is the only hearth needed. It's approved for bedrooms in the US and Canada too.
What finishes and accessories come with or fit the Stardance DV?
It comes in classic black, majolica brown, bordeaux, or sand, with a ceramic burner, ceramic glass, operable doors, and a safety barrier included. You can add a warming shelf, a variable-speed heat-activated fan kit, and gas vent paint in majolica brown or bordeaux.
The Vermont Castings Story
Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
