Who It's For
Winter storms knock out power right when you need heat most. You need a gas stove that runs without electricity. The Forge & Flame Intrepid, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for a small room or cabin where the owner wants the look of a cast iron stove and heat they can count on. An electric-ignition stove goes dark in an outage; this one keeps burning.
What Makes It Special
A standing pilot needs no electricity, so the stove works through a power outage. A small pilot flame stays lit between fires.
Behind the operable doors, a ceramic burner and a four-piece split oak log set give a realistic fire. The doors, ceramic glass, and safety barrier make it look and feel like a classic wood stove.
Choose classic black or bordeaux enamel, with a matching warming shelf.
Possible Downsides
- It cannot be sold in New York or Rhode Island; the electronic-ignition Intrepid can.
- Remotes and the fan are add-ons.
- It ships for natural gas; propane needs a conversion kit.
If you want gas heat that keeps going through a power outage, the Forge & Flame Intrepid is the right decision. The neighborhood goes dark, and your living room stays warm and glowing.
Choose classic black or bordeaux and a matching warming shelf, then add a propane conversion kit, fan kit, vent paint, an on/off remote, or a touchscreen thermostat remote.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size room is the Forge & Flame Intrepid DV meant to heat?
The Forge & Flame Intrepid DV is rated for 450–950 sq ft, so it suits a small room, a cabin, or one main living area. It's a cast iron stove crafted with Vermont Castings, offered in classic black or bordeaux enamel, with an optional warming shelf in the same finish.
Does the Intrepid DV work when the power goes out?
Yes. The Intrepid DV uses a millivolt standing pilot that stays lit and generates enough voltage to run the stove, so it keeps heating through an outage. Only the optional fan kit connects to household power.
Can the Intrepid DV run on propane?
Yes, but it ships set up for natural gas, so propane needs the propane conversion kit, installed by a qualified technician. On natural gas the millivolt model runs from 12,500 to 17,000 BTU/h input, and on propane from 12,000 to 16,000 BTU/h.
How is the Intrepid DV vented?
It's a direct vent stove that exhausts from the rear through a 4-inch inner and 6-5/8-inch outer pipe, out a side wall or up through the roof. A horizontal run can reach 20 feet with up to 40 feet of rise, and a vertical system must end between 8 and 40 feet above the flue collar.
What are my control choices for the Intrepid DV?
It runs from a wall switch, or you can wire in a wall thermostat rated for 500–750 millivolts. Optional battery-receiver remotes include a simple on/off hand-held and a touchscreen thermostat remote with thermostatic control, a six-hour timer, and sleep mode.
Can I install the Intrepid DV in a bedroom or a mobile home?
Yes, where local codes allow. Because it's a sealed direct vent unit that doesn't use room air for combustion, the manual approves it for bedrooms in the US and Canada. It's also approved for aftermarket, permanently located manufactured (mobile) homes, a listing the manual marks USA only.
Does the Intrepid DV need a hearth pad, and can it go in an alcove?
No hearth pad is needed on rigid floors like hardwood, tile, or brick; on carpet, use a metal or wooden panel covering the stove's full footprint. The Intrepid DV also fits an alcove at least 69-3/4 inches tall and 33-3/16 inches wide, up to 18-15/16 inches deep.
Can I buy the Intrepid DV in New York or Rhode Island?
No. This standing-pilot Intrepid DV can't be sold in New York or Rhode Island, but the electronic-ignition Intrepid can. That version uses the IntelliFire Touch ignition system and comes with the fan as standard, while on the Intrepid DV the fan is an add-on.
The Vermont Castings Story
Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
