Who It's For
A large room needs a large stove, and in a winter storm it needs one that keeps going without electricity. You want both. The Forge & Flame Radiance, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for the big family room or open space where the owner wants classic cast iron style and outage-proof heat. A smaller stove struggles in a big room; this one is built for it.
What Makes It Special
It is the largest of the cast iron gas stoves, with a ceramic burner and four-piece split oak logs for a full, realistic fire.
A standing pilot means no electricity is needed, so the fire keeps going when the power does not. The small pilot flame stays lit between uses.
Operable doors, ceramic glass, and a safety barrier complete the look. Choose classic black, majolica brown, or bordeaux enamel.
Possible Downsides
- It cannot be sold in New York or Rhode Island; the electronic-ignition Radiance can.
- Remotes and the fan are extras.
- Propane requires a separate conversion kit.
If you want big cast iron gas heat that does not depend on the power grid, the Forge & Flame Radiance is the right decision. When the lights flicker out, the fire keeps the whole room glowing.
Choose classic black, majolica brown, or bordeaux, then add a warming shelf, propane conversion kit, fan kit, vent paint, on/off remote, or thermostat remote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much space can the Forge & Flame Radiance DV heat?
The Radiance DV heats about 950–1,900 sq ft, and it's the largest of the cast iron gas stoves in the family. Input runs from 25,000 to 38,000 BTU per hour on natural gas, or 25,000 to 36,000 on propane, so you can turn it down for milder days.
Does the Radiance DV work when the power is out?
Yes. It uses a standing pilot that stays lit all the time and generates enough voltage to run the stove, so no household electricity is needed. This standing-pilot version can't be sold in New York or Rhode Island, where the electronic-ignition Radiance is the option.
Can I run the Radiance DV on propane?
Yes, it runs on natural gas or propane, but propane requires a separate conversion kit. The stove doesn't need derating for altitude up to 2,000 feet on natural gas or 4,500 feet on propane.
How is the Radiance DV vented?
It's a direct vent stove that draws outside air for combustion and vents out the top through an exterior wall or the roof. For a wall exit, the pipe must rise at least 24 inches before the first elbow, with up to 20 feet of horizontal run. A LINK-STOVE kit with 30 feet of 4-inch flex can route it through an existing masonry chimney.
How do I turn the Radiance DV on and adjust the flame?
It runs from a wall switch, and a HI/LO knob on the gas valve sets the flame height. You can add a hand-held on/off remote or a touch screen thermostat remote with thermostat, six-hour timer, and sleep modes. A wired wall thermostat also works if it's rated for 500–750 millivolts.
How close to the wall can the Radiance DV go, and does it need a hearth?
In a parallel install it needs 4 inches to the rear wall and 6 inches to the side walls, and it's approved for a combustible alcove up to 48 inches deep, at least 72 inches tall when the minimum vent kit is used. It can sit on any rigid floor; on carpet, you'll need a metal or wood panel the full width and depth of the stove.
Can the Radiance DV be installed in a manufactured or mobile home?
Yes. The manual allows it in an aftermarket, permanently located manufactured home in the USA, or in a mobile home, where local codes don't prohibit it. As a direct vent stove, it must vent straight outdoors and can't share a chimney with another appliance.
What maintenance does the Radiance DV need?
Have a qualified gas technician inspect the stove and vent system every year. Vacuum or brush the control compartment and burner area at least twice a year, check the fragile logs and burner for dust before each use, and clean the ceramic glass two or three times per heating season.
The Vermont Castings Story
Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
