Who It's For
A pilot light that burns year-round wastes gas in the months you never use the stove. You want a compact gas stove that only burns when it is on. The Forge & Flame Intrepid with electronic ignition, crafted with Vermont Castings, is for the small room or cabin where the owner wants modern control in a traditional cast iron stove. A standing pilot burns all year; this one turns off.
What Makes It Special
Electronic ignition lights the burner only when you call for heat, and a battery backup keeps it working during a power outage.
A variable-speed fan is built in to move warm air into the room. The touchscreen thermostat remote comes in the box; add the Wi-Fi module if you want app control.
Behind the operable doors and ceramic glass, a ceramic burner and split oak logs give a realistic fire. Choose classic black or bordeaux enamel.
Possible Downsides
- App control is a separate purchase.
- It ships for natural gas; propane needs a conversion kit.
If you want a small gas stove with modern controls and no year-round pilot, the Forge & Flame Intrepid is the right decision. Tap the remote from the couch and the room is warm by the time the movie starts.
Choose classic black or bordeaux, then add a warming shelf, a propane conversion kit, vent paint, and the Wi-Fi module.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much space can the Forge & Flame Intrepid gas stove heat?
It's sized for about 450–950 sq ft, such as a small room or a cabin. It runs from 12,500 to 17,000 BTU per hour on natural gas, or 12,000 to 16,000 on propane, and it ships for natural gas, so propane needs the conversion kit.
Does the Intrepid have a pilot light that burns all year?
No. Its IntelliFire Touch electronic ignition lights the burner only when you call for heat, so no standing pilot burns through the summer. If you want it, the Cold Climate feature can run just the pilot to warm the firebox and reduce condensation in cool, humid weather.
Will the Intrepid work when the power is out?
Yes. A factory-installed battery pack takes four AA batteries (not included) and lets the ignition system run during an outage. While it's on battery power, the fan, lights, and other features that need household current won't work, and the manual says to use batteries only for emergencies.
What does the Intrepid's remote control?
The included IFT-RC400 touchscreen remote handles on and off, flame height, thermostat mode, the Cold Climate feature, and fan speed. The built-in fan waits about three minutes after startup so it pushes warm air, not cold. App control needs the separate Wi-Fi module.
How does the Intrepid vent?
It's a rear-vent direct-vent stove that goes straight out through the wall behind it or up through the roof. A straight-through termination can extend up to 24 inches off the back, while longer horizontal runs need a 24-inch vertical rise and can reach 20 feet. Vertical systems end 8 to 40 feet above the flue collar.
How close to the wall can I put the Intrepid?
In a parallel installation, the manual shows 2-1/2 inches to the back wall and 4 inches to the side walls, and a corner install needs 2 inches. It also fits a combustible alcove at least 69-3/4 inches high and 33-3/16 inches wide, up to 18-15/16 inches deep. On carpet, set it on a full-size metal or wood panel.
Is the Intrepid approved for bedrooms and manufactured homes?
Yes. The manual approves it for bedroom installations in the US and Canada, and for permanently located manufactured homes (US only) or mobile homes where local codes allow. Its ratings hold without derating up to 4,500 feet above sea level.
What finishes and add-ons are available for the Intrepid?
It comes in classic black or bordeaux enamel, with operable doors, ceramic glass, a ceramic burner, and split oak logs. You can add a warming shelf in either finish, the propane conversion kit, bordeaux gas vent paint, and the Wi-Fi module for app control.
The Vermont Castings Story
Vermont Castings was founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme, the designer, and his brother-in-law Murray Howell, the business partner, in Randolph, Vermont. Their first stove, the cast-iron Defiant, went on sale in 1976. The company has changed hands several times since 1990, and Hearth & Home Technologies has owned it since 2014. Since 2023, Vermont Castings stoves have been sold under the Forge & Flame name, still cast in Randolph.
