Who It's For

In a great room or a space with tall ceilings, a standard fireplace can look undersized, and the fire gets lost on the wall. You need a fireplace with the presence to anchor a large room. The Renaissance Rumford 1500 is the larger of the two Rumford models, for the homeowner who wants a classic opening and a real wood fire at a bigger scale. Choose the smaller Rumford in a big room and it reads as an accent; choose this one and it reads as the centerpiece.

What Makes It Special

It is the largest of Renaissance’s patented Rumford designs, with a firebox big enough to fill the room with light and heat and logs up to 22 inches.

You choose the lining: refractory brick in a running bond, built to last a lifetime, or high-performance vermiculite panels in a herringbone pattern, where cracks and wear over time are normal.

The glass door and screen lift up into the facing and out of sight; with the door closed, no heat is lost up the chimney. Renaissance lists the Rumford 1500 as qualified under the federal Burn Wise voluntary fireplace program.

Possible Downsides

If your room calls for a big, traditional wood fire, the Renaissance Rumford 1500 is the right decision. The great room finally has a fireplace that matches the size of the space.

Choose a brick or vermiculite lining, plus a rooftop radiation shield and an optional outside air kit.

The Renaissance Story

Renaissance Fireplaces is the wood fireplace line of Industrial Chimney Company (ICC), of Saint-Jérôme, Quebec. ICC has made chimneys since 1991, and in 2008 it launched Renaissance with the Rumford 1000, a built-in take on the tall, shallow fireplace Count Rumford designed in the 1790s. Every Renaissance burns wood behind a glass door and a screen that slide up out of sight, and three of today's four models qualified at the cleaner Phase 2 level of EPA's voluntary fireplace program. ICC also makes RSF fireplaces.
