Who It's For

A traditional fireplace is supposed to feel like the heart of the house, but many built-in units look like a metal box with a fire in it. You need a fireplace that looks the way a real fireplace should. The Renaissance Rumford 1000 is for the homeowner who wants a classic Rumford-style opening, a wood fire, and a lining picked to match the room. Choose a plain metal box and the fire looks installed; choose this one and it looks like it was always there.

What Makes It Special

The Rumford shape is the point: a shallow, angled firebox that throws the fire’s radiant heat into the room. With the glass door closed there is no heat loss up the chimney, and the Rumford 1000 was the first fireplace to win the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Excellence Award.

You pick the lining. Refractory brick in a running bond is built to last a lifetime. Vermiculite panels in a herringbone pattern are the high-performance choice, though cracks and visible wear over time are normal.

The glass door and screen lift up into the facing and out of sight. Close only the screen to hear the crackle of an open fire, and the door swings outward for cleaning. Renaissance lists the Rumford 1000 as qualified under the federal Burn Wise voluntary fireplace program.

Possible Downsides

If you want a traditional wood fireplace that looks like a true hearth, the Renaissance Rumford 1000 is the right decision. The fireplace looks like it came with the house, and the room organizes itself around it.

Choose the B or C series body and a brick or vermiculite lining, plus a rooftop radiation shield and an optional outside air kit.

The Renaissance Story

Renaissance Fireplaces is the wood fireplace line of Industrial Chimney Company (ICC), of Saint-Jérôme, Quebec. ICC has made chimneys since 1991, and in 2008 it launched Renaissance with the Rumford 1000, a built-in take on the tall, shallow fireplace Count Rumford designed in the 1790s. Every Renaissance burns wood behind a glass door and a screen that slide up out of sight, and three of today's four models qualified at the cleaner Phase 2 level of EPA's voluntary fireplace program. ICC also makes RSF fireplaces.
