Who It's For
An open masonry fireplace looks warm, but most of its heat goes straight up the chimney, and the room cools off the minute the fire dies down. You need the fireplace you already have to start heating the house. The RSF Focus 3600i is for the family that loves a wood fire and wants it to do real work, without building a new fireplace to get there. Keep the open fire and you keep feeding a chimney; slide this insert in and the same wood heats 800 to 1,500 square feet.
What Makes It Special
It is RSF’s first fireplace insert, built around a 2.04 cubic foot firebox—enough room for logs up to 18 inches behind an air-tight glass door. It closes off the draft of the open masonry fireplace, so the fire stops pulling warm air out of your house.
It also meets the 2020 federal emission standard, so it burns clean as well as hot. Add the optional heat-activated blower and it switches itself on once the insert is warm, pushing that heat out into the room instead of letting it collect around the fireplace.
Possible Downsides
- The blower is an add-on. Without it, the insert heats the room it sits in by radiation alone.
- It needs an existing masonry fireplace. For a wall with no fireplace, look at the Focus 3600 or Pearl 3600.
- It is a wood fire. You carry wood in and ash out.
If your fireplace is pretty but cold, the RSF Focus 3600i is the right decision. The room that used to feel drafty becomes the one everyone gathers in on a winter night.
Options include the heat-activated blower, an oversize or deep backing plate to cover the old opening, and a firescreen.

The RSF Story
RSF Woodburning Fireplaces is the wood fireplace brand of Industrial Chimney Company (ICC), a privately owned manufacturer in Saint-Jérôme, Quebec. The letters stand for Renewable Solid Fuel. RSF started as RSF Energy in northern British Columbia, and ICC bought the line and moved it to Quebec. Every current RSF burns wood, and all but the see-through Focus ST are certified to the EPA's 2020 wood heater standard.
