Who It's For
A traditional fireplace box can look dated in a modern room, and a blank wall gives the eye nowhere to land. You need a fire with clean, horizontal lines that anchors the room and still puts out real heat. If you are building or remodeling and want a contemporary gas fire for a living area of roughly 950 to 1,900 square feet, the Esprit L44 is the one. Like any built-in fireplace, it frames into the wall and is finished around it, so the wall is part of the project.
What Makes It Special
The Esprit is a linear fire about 46 inches wide that ships with a painted black firebox, a black glass bed, top lighting, and a remote. Press a button and the fire is on; adjust it with the remote and the flame comes down by about a third for a softer evening.
You can change the look without changing the fireplace: three firebox panel choices, an optional log set, and an ember-bed lighting kit. The pilot lights when you turn the fire on and goes out when you turn it off, so there is no flame burning gas between fires.
Possible Downsides
- The blower is optional, not included. Without it, the heat stays closer to the fireplace.
- It ships with a glass bed, not logs. The log set is an add-on.
- Propane needs a conversion kit. It ships set up for natural gas.
If you want a modern linear gas fire that becomes the focal point of a new or remodeled room, the Esprit L44 is the right decision. The wall you used to walk past becomes the first thing everyone notices.
The Esprit L44 takes Black Porcelain, Fluted, or Ledgestone firebox panels, an optional Birchwood log set, an ember-bed lighting kit, an optional blower, and a propane conversion kit.

The Pacific Energy Story
Pacific Energy Fireplace Products was founded in 1978 by Paul Erickson in Duncan, British Columbia. It's best known for steel and cast-iron wood stoves, many finished in porcelain enamel from its own plant, and it also builds wood fireplaces, gas fireplaces, and gas stoves. The same company makes Town & Country gas fireplaces, True North, and Elegant Electric. Sweden's NIBE group became the majority owner in 2022, and NIBE's 2023 annual report lists the company as wholly owned.
